On one side of the courtyard, there's a raised box of soil, in which Daniel is attempting to grow some garlic. He doesn't have any illusions about it repelling vampires, but it would be nice to taste again. Spices are difficult to come across, these days

Anna is not quite hesitant as she steps into the courtyard, but she is very quiet.

"Do you need help with that, Daniel?"

He doesn't quite start, but that's only because he's gotten used to being surprised by how quiet Anna can be.

"I'm almost done." Topic of conversation would be good...

"Hungry?"

"Oh."

Beat.

"I could eat, yes. Would--what have we got?"

"Hm. Rice? There's a little oil, and if we cooked some vegetables, it might almost be like stir-fry." No fresh meat, but Anna is a vegetarian anyway.

He doesn't count the blood.

"We can live it up, throw some hot peppers in." He should raid an Asian specialty store, now that he thinks of it.
