Wood type?

So... this is something I haven't done in ages, but want to attempt to do again. I want to make a "stamp" out of wood. But I am not sure which type of wood to use. I know you can buy blocks at the craft store. Although, that seems expensive compared to what you could get at the home improvement store. Does it make a difference? The only ones I've
