I just came across this post by accident.
Gosh how do you do this? Its going to take years for me if Im going to do mine. I just know that my number one episode is In My Time of Dying and the rest? I don't even know. Probably Its a Terrible Life and Faith and Mystery Spot and Jus in Bello? Ummm Now you got me thinking lol
I have the same feelings toward season 9 though. most of the episodes will end up at the bottom of the list if I ever have one. I got my DVD back home. Guess I bought it out of habit haha but I haven't once rewatch any episodes of that season ever since I got it late last year. Ummm

Oh and one of the reasons why I really like In My Time of Dying is because I really really like Tessa. So it pissed me off so much that they killed her off! Arh I am still pissed typing this. It can be anyone but they chose Tessa! Arg

IT TOOK ME SO LONG. An entire Sunday, and that was after already working on it for a few hours grabbed here and there the week before. And honestly, the top 30 and bottom 30 are pretty set, but the middle episodes change almost every time I come in to add a new one. It's hard to be sure which of the just okay episodes you like more or less at any given time ( ... )

Something about them turning my favorite character into his brother's rapist--or if you resist that reading, at the very least the person who helped someone else perpetually violate his brother's bodily autonomy when said brother's autonomy has already been violated time and time again and he used to be the only person said brother could trust, which is the knowledge he used to manipulate him into allowing him to do it in the first place--in the very first episode left a bad taste in my mouth! Don't worry. Sam will inexplicably forgive him over and over again and we will be led to believe their relationship is absolutely fine because Dean said "I'm proud of us" when he was dying (proud of what? you failed. the creepy uncle from Freaks and Geeks killed you and you treated your brother like luggage for a year before, beating him repeatedly for trying to help you and ditching him when convenient, not even sure why you went theough the trouble of keeping him alive, you clearly do not give one fuck about him ( ... )

The big bad is the creepy uncle looking ass motherfucker from Freaks and Geeks! LOL! Hey, we'll bring back Bobby and Gabriel because WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH WHITE MEN ON THIS SHOW AND WE CANNOT JUST LET ANY OF THEM DIE but LOL, let's add in an episode where we really, really confirm that Kevin is dead so no one thinks he can come back after that. You know, like we did with Henriksen, the third regular you were supposed to get instead of Castiel until we realized he was black, Cherie's never really gotten over that one, so it'll be funny to do it again! We'll even have him inexplicably jump on the "disavow Sam's feelings by telling him to just get over his anger at Dean" train because why not castrate Kevin, who previously held grudges when the Winchesters were shitty to him? That's how everyone writes Asian men and no one needed this character to remain better than a stereotype anyway ( ... )

I swear to god though, all of this? All of this is why I'm glad I got out when I could. I just took all the seasons of this show that I loved, locked them in a safe place in my mind, and ran away. Because yes, Castiel has nowhere left to go and nothing left to do but he is STILL HERE, Bobby and Gabriel have both been killed but they're COMING BACK and apparently Bobby is now coming back AGAIN???? WHAT THE WHAT.

Honestly, it took like a fucking week to do the 200 episodes when I made the list. Now it's pretty easy to maintain, as long as I'm diligent about going in and updating it after each episode and don't let anything pile up. Of course things change depending on my moods, especially in the middle 150. The top and bottom episodes are pretty set for me.

Man, where's the nerd emoji when you need it? I want to steal my own lunch money.

Sorry I have come to this late, and came here because I follow you (albeit only as a lurker) on twitter (bit of a fangirl of your SPN fic - 'Oh my Queen' is still one of my faves ever). But the whole exercise of 'grading' episodes made me laugh because I spent a remarkably significant amount of time doing this very same thing. I ended up getting very nerdy (very nerdy indeed - like excel spreadsheet nerdy) and put together a numerical criteria. It produced some odd results and has needed to refining (in terms of weighting what I thought was important) but I simply found it impossible to use my gut to just make a decision. Not sure how you make up your mind but I thought I would come out from behind my lurk in order to acknowledge and appreciate the enormity of the task you have undertaken.

Hahaha, well, for what it's worth, the "going with your gut" strategy is only useful up to a point. About the top and bottom 30 or so of this list are pretty much set, because I have strong, strong feelings about those, but the middle TWO HUNDRED? Change all the time. Usually I shuffle stuff around every time I come to rank a new episode. Sometimes even when there's no new episode. This list is very much dependent on my moods or what's shading my way of thinking about things at any particular time. So. Less solid than your more scientific method. XD

(and okay, hiiiiiii, thank you so much for saying nice things about my fic--ESPECIALLY Oh, My Queen! That fic is kind of my proudest achievement, it holds a special place in my heart, and I can't stress how meaningful it is to know it holds the same kind of place for others, so thank you for telling me that ♥)

My top 20 ish have been pretty fixed too - although Baby came in and moved some things around (which was refreshing because later seasons have never scored so well). I ended up having to heavily weight my 'Bro Mo' criteria before my top 20 looked like anything that I recognised as my favourites.

OMG - Oh My Queen was so amazing - it made me cry at times as well as laugh and really opened my mind to some issues that I had never thought about. Thank you so much for that :)
