Say, who would you recommend to make a lap harp (in C but perhaps with F#, C# and G# sharpening levers) that would sound great but not be overly expensive. I don't need the full 32 strings right away. I could do with less but I'd like to be able to play in all four of those keys.
I love James Jones instruments (he made my hammered dulcimer and does great work) but he's been ill and is only now starting to take orders so I'm looking for other options. Thoughts?
Nylon or wire? New or used? I could really talk your ears off here. I've played a lot of different makers of both. Nylon - Stoney End makes reasonably priced, nice sounding harps with the lever option. I like that you can buy the kit "in the white", meaning it's put together, you just finish the wood and string it. Thus, it's cheaper. A Cunningham (Atlanta) would be sweet. I love playing his nylon harps, they just have an exquisite sound and his prices aren't too bad (27 string for $1600). Wire- folcharp.com is a new builder in Tennessee, but a scholar with a passion for sound and has actually been building for 20+ years if I remember correctly, otherwise, Witcher.
I only have the one... it wound up a lot bigger after the baby. I now discourage women from hipbone tattoos. :P But, since my upper arms are bigger now too... bigger tattoo!
