The transmission started slipping on the ford and it would have been $1900 to have it overhauled. So considering the car is almost 10 years old already and it might only run another 2-3 years (IF nothing else went wrong, which as far as cars go is very unlikely!) and I drive between 25,000 and 30,000 miles a year with this job, I just needed a new car. It's safer. Plus, like you said, the only good thing in particular about Fords is that the parts are super easy to get.
Prius' are nice! I checked one out briefly and longingly while I was searching. That and the new Saturn Sky. As you might say, cargasm!
Yeah, I test drove a Prius a while back. It was AWESOME!
You did the right thing...I never would have paid to fix a car in that position. I'm in somewhat of a similar situation because the Chrysler needs some repairs...mainly because it's so damn old (11 years)...it's drivable but becoming unsafe...so we need to pick up a new car in the next 2-6 months. I want a Corolla because they're affordable, reliable and get good gas mileage...but there are so freaking few of them with anti-lock brakes it's pissing me off. I refuse to sacrafice that in Minnesota winters. We could afford a Camry and I like them even better...but then the gas efficiency tanks. So...I don't know what to do.
Poor Christopher...but you're right. It's time to get a new car, especially if it's getting unsafe to drive. I don't know if you like Saturns or not, but I had a really awesome experience working with the people at Saturn. They were not only friendly and helpful, they don't get paid more if you buy a more expensive car, so they aren't nearly as pushy as other dealerships. They also did their damndest to keep me within my budget. They managed to get me wrap coverage for five dollars a month and keep me at a payment of $250/month, 4.9% APR. Plus I got a recent graduate discount (around $800 off--not too bad!) I don't know if they're still doing that deal or not. It was for a pretty limited time it sounded, but you could check into it.
