Absence
He peers closely at the deformed pillow; its dips and creases shaped by the head that had lain on it not so long ago. A reluctant hand stretches out, a slender digit lightly tracing the strands of hair peppered across its cotton casing. The hollow depressions on the bed retained its shape; molded by the curves of his lover's body, losing its warmth in the musty air of his bedroom. Bathed in the listless gray twilight, he leans back, a long drawn sigh escaping his lips.
I'll only be away for a week...
He waits; indulging misery until day breaks and the morning sun glints mockingly on his face.
Escape
He despised the moments of contemplation that haunted him in his idle time. Here he was: 26, unmarried, has an unhealthy addiction to smoking and video games, aching back like an old man... Somehow, he thought he would outgrow this and be the mature, responsible adult he pictured in his mind. Reality was a bitter pill to swallow when where he thought he would be, and where he actually was, lay in parallel paths that won't meet...
Crouched into a small corner, stubby fingers mercilessly mashed the buttons of his console as he willed the nagging thoughts to flee...
Regrets
He looks at himself and wonders if this was where he ought to be. There were expectations to live up to; hopes resting on his shoulders.
Idol, newscaster, actor, musician... serious, funny, glamorous, intelligent...
He sighs, taking stock of all the things he's done and experienced. After a while, he raises a determined head to the sky, taking in the soft balmy air, the mild orange hues of the sunset reflected on his soft, brown eyes. The young man nods quietly to himself.
You're not doing so bad...
