No really, the rain out there is going pretty decently. Not as bad as some times where it comes down in sheets but it's still pouring. This makes me a happy panda. This is good because unfortunately, my day started off on a stellar "I hate my life" kind of foot with an automated call from my bank this morning. Apparently mister computer decided ten in the morning was a decent hour to wake me to let me know that there was something suspicious about my account and that it had been locked into deposit only mode until I visited a branch to change it. Guess who was ridiculously happy to get that news while she was still basically not awake. Certainly not me. Cue a quick shower and a run down to the bank to talk with someone there only to find out the suspicious activity in question was (wait for it) that I use my debit card a lot. Or something like that but they don't really know. Yeah. You know that twitch you get in the corner of your eye when faced with chance encounters of pure stupidity...
But I'm not going to be miserable today because I'm in a good mood. In fact, I'm in a ridiculously good mood. Why? Probably mostly the rain but here's a few other things that just might be on my mind lately.
My cousin's wedding was only last weekend but it feels more like it was a million years ago now. It's weird to think about but that tends to be the way Klassen weddings go. Everyone goes, does the ceremony part, gets ridiculously drunk and then does the pilgimage back to wherever we all came from. (Most of them go Saskatchewan-ward) This is basically the wedding formula for the Klassens and it's the prototype for every single celebratory event we ever have. Well, until now.
My sister has been engaged for a year now and after last weekend's whirlwind activities, she's finally set a date and get this, we won't be dealing with a billion relatives over two days. It'll be interesting because this will be the first time that the Klassens will hear of anyone in the family just up and getting hitched without everyone there. I know Kayla was a little sad about not inviting some family members but with a family as big as ours, it's difficult to really make that kind of choice. My cousin's wedding had a guest list of over three hundred people and while it's true that is at least half the other side, that's still over a hundred people to invite when you add in kids, spouses, any additional guests they might bring with them and any friends you might have as well. So Kayla and Brandon are breaking out of the tradition and going small in Jasper next May. The funny part is that they basically have everything planned out already. She needs to get a few things between now and then but really, it's basically all set.
And I get to be all girly and be the maid of honor! I told Kayla this means that the second either of us has a little extra money, it's time for some celebratory shoe shopping.
In other fun news, I finished reading through my entry for last year's three day novel contest. I won't go into detail here because that's what I have a neglected writing journal for but I can tell you now that I've never been so happy to not have that thing published. I like the idea but holy shit, it's pretty sadly rendered. It's funny because only now while I was reading it can I really explain to people the question I get asked all the time when I tell people about the contest. Everyone asks how they know it was written in three days, especially since it's on the honor system. Now, if you've never tried to write a novel in three days, I suppose that's a fair question. If you have, you don't need to ask. I can only guess at what kinds of fun material they get but you've got to remember, they're looking at fruits of labor born out of three days of starvation, sleep deprivation and coffee overdoses. If you manage to get out it with something that might be borderline coherent, you're doing good. If someone submits something so amazing that it seems like it was written in a year, it wasn't written in three days. Just saying.
And finally, I'm in a stellar mood because I've spent the day listening to the new ohGr album. This album can best be described as the result of what would have happened if Too Dark Park hooked up with Bedside Toxicology and had a little bit of Luigi Largo thrown in for good measure. If this is what the new Skinny Puppy album is going to be like, I'm going to start counting down the seconds until that album comes out which if I remember is supposed to be next fall. By that I'm sure they mean next winter but I'll forgive them for being awesome.
So yeah, that's the mad haps around here these days. Exciting no?
