A friend of mine and I had an awesome conversation the other day about the merits of the show Are You Afraid of the Dark? and that line has been stuck in my head ever since. Anyway...
Hello and welcome to the second installment of my Halloween extravaganza! Today I'm sharing one of the stories I heard in class this afternoon. Before anyone scoffs, this is a gooder and what's even better is that it's a ghost story that comes from right here in the very area I live in! (This is the kind of awesome shit you get to learn about when you are in a Folklore class!) Anyway, I bring you the tale of the Henday Ghost!
For those of you not in the know or not familiar with my area of Canada-land, the Henday is a building that is part of the student residence on campus. There are different versions of this story, like in all good folklore, but this is the version I heard. Some versions say that this happened in the twenties but others say it was later. I heard the later version so I'm passing that one on.
It was said that in the seventies, around the time the building went co-ed, there was a young couple there. The girl lived on the eighth floor and she was a very serious student. Her boyfriend was an engineering student who lived on the first floor. Everything was fine for the first little while until midterms hit and the girl became distant as she studied tirelessly for her exams. The boyfriend would come up to visit her but his attempts to get her to be affectionate were blown off. One day, he became too annoying for the girl to handle and she got angry with him for interfering with her studying. Annoyed with her lack of attention, the boy stormed off to sulk and the girl tried to return to her studies. She continued to try to focus on her books but the fight with her boyfriend weighed heavy on her mind to the point where she couldn't take it anymore. Eventually she packed up her books and made her way down to the first floor to apologize to her boyfriend for hurting his feelings. When she got there, she found him in bed with another girl. Stunned, the girl stood there and flatly told him that she would be right back. Making her way back up the stairs, she acted like a zombie on her way to the eighth floor. When she got back to her room, she decided that she was too overwhelmed by school and the loss of her boyfriend and couldn't take it anymore. She jumped out of the window to the ground below in time for her boyfriend to see her die.
There are reports to this day that people can hear footsteps on the roof of the Henday building, pacing back and forth. I'm not sure what the deal is with this but people have said that they heard what sounded like marbles rolling around or rolling down the stairs at night. Some people have reported balls of light moving around up there too. For more Henday ghosts, be sure to check out
THIS LINK for some of the other fun activities that these afterlife kids like to pull over on us living folks. (If any of you spare the two minutes that it takes to watch that video posted on the blog, you should know that from what I've seen, the Marina looks pretty much the same as it did back then.)
HERE is another one to check out.
Feel free to send along your own little spooky stories and I'll be sure to write up some of the gooders I hear in class. Enjoy!
