not sure why, but i found the ending really... cute.

i like what you've done with this, it shows a type of mental disassociation in June's mind that I think really illustrates how the persona of Zero is not only allowed to exist, but permitted to do things June would have found reprehensible in her former state.

either that or death has made her jaded. ;)

Haha! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I wasn't sure at what note did I want to end this. It was too easy to leave it at some form of despair, so I opted for something where at least Akane was glad that despite everything she did, she was still, in one way... happy.

Yeah, seeing how she's seen death countless of times, she'd probably be jaded by the whole thing. XD But it was interesting, trying to figure out what she would be like as Zero. What would she think of? What would be her motivation for it all? I couldn't really piece it all together, so I decided to work on it in this form. It doesn't always work for a lot of people, so I'm glad you still liked it!

You know, when I finished 999, I've always wanted to see a fic about Akane's true thoughts before, during, and after the game because the one that we see through Junpei's eyes is NOT her true self. I don't really think we ever see the real Akane, except when she's a kid.

But I think you've done a splendid job that portrays what her thoughts would be like. I don't think she'd be cold-blooded in her mission; anybody would have suffered if they were in her shoes. You show her fear and her pain as she struggles with what she has to do in order to survive. Behind the mask that she wears is someone who's on the verge of breaking.

But Akane, like any other human being, desperately wants to be loved and accepted despite her actions, even though she knows she doesn't deserve it. It makes the parts where she actually feels the love from Junpei stand out so much more.

Thanks for the read! :)

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! And yeah, that was what I had hoped to portray. What or who Akane really is is a mystery, and it was something I was keen to get on. I'm aware that my portrayal may not be right, but it was worth a shot all the same.

If anything, I was certain her love for Junpei was what pulled her through most of the time. Or else, the morphic field would not have worked. Which is why I emphasised a lot on their love here.

I'm really glad you enjoyed this! ^^
