30 Days, Day 2

Nov 21, 2009 12:06

Because this one is easy, the post is really long. Go figure.

Day 02 → Your favorite movie

I was working on a film studies specialization for awhile there in college. (And by awhile, I mean my junior year, before I got super lazy and decided that writing an honors thesis about movies was a waste of time for someone trying to find a career in the anemic news industry and I had probably better concentrate on that if I ever wanted a job...plus I decided to focus on design and wanted to take art classes instead. Also I'm a flake.)

Anyway, as a result, I saw a lot of very, very good movies (as well as Good Movies, the ones that everyone says are good). Some of them I adored, like "Casablanca," some of them were really weird and therefore fascinating, like The Pillow Book, and some of them, I'd pretty much rather throw myself off a bridge than watch ever again. (In my intro class, we watched this Irish movie about a garbage strike? And kids throwing themselves into garbage choked canals to kill themselves? Yeah, I didn't enjoy that one at all. It was awful.)

But my favorite movie would probably make my film professors fail me on sight, because it's hardly award-winning stuff that makes you think (or depresses you to the point of making you want to throw yourself off a bridge).

Because it's Love Actually. I'm on my second DVD, because I lent the first one out and it got lost, and I literally could not live without having a copy of it. (And I still stop flipping channels every time the edited-to-be-appropriate version is on Lifetime. True story.)

I watch this movie at least once every Christmas, and if Christmas is All Around is not part of your Christmas playlist, you're totally missing out. I watch this movie when I am sad or stressed or angry. (You can gauge how depressed I am by whether or not the voiceover at the beginning makes me cry, and if I'm watching it wrapped up in my yellow blanket, it means I've had a really. bad. day.) I had to skate a program for my ice skating final freshman year, I used the Prime Minister's Theme from Love Actually. Evora/Ladwig are using Love Actually for their short program this year and even though they kind of fell all over the place the first time I saw them skate it, I still cried. Kate threw my bachelorette party...it was Love Actually themed (and yup, we watched it).

I made the cellist at our wedding learn the Portuguese Love Theme so I could walk down the aisle to it.

Love Actually makes me happy. In fact, if today wasn't packed full of skating to watch, I'd watch it right now.
