BBC Sherlock fandom, I hate you so very very much

"Further proof they want their show to fail. I mean come on. Casting a woman as Watson is so… American. And I’m not saying that in like a snobby “America sucks” kind of way… it’s more in a “come on American society, are you that ridiculous?” And of course, they cover up the homophobic feel of this decision by making her Asian and therefore having a ( Read more... )

I haven't been this angry about fandom stuff in a long time. Proper, yelling at the screen angry at some of the shit people come out with. AND they try to dress it up as concerns about homophobia when really they are just being massive, total and utter dicks. ... sorry for splurging my bile all over your journal.

Please, by all means splurge away (I have!). The Sherlock fans are now saying that they aren't racist and sexist (oh no siree!), and that Lucy Liu being cast is actually oppressing WOC because -- get this -- her cultural identity wouldn't be an Asian woman, so she would only ever be seen as a white dude substitute and therefore could never as good a Watson as the white dudes. So, you see, they are only trying to protect her.

I piss in their cereal.

... riiiiight. If I ever need protecting I know who not to call.

I also really love the one where casting Lucy Liu as Watson is tokenism and therefore there the role should go to a white dude. That would be... better?

And how would it even make sense for Watson to be female? How could that ever happen? A war veteran doctor lady? Can not be! Can not be! That has literally never happened that women served in a war as medical staff. Except in every war the US has fought since the Civil War.

And (part 2) in BBC Sherlock Moffatt wrote Irene Adler says she's gay, but then she falls in love with Sherlock and that's not gay-erasing because somehow when she says she's gay she obviously means bisexual and there's nothing wrong with that, but CBS making the Watson character a woman is gay-erasing because... of reasons? And BBC Sherlock's on-fucking-going lol-we're-not-gay jokes are super duper fine, but turning a friendship between two men into a friendship between a man and a woman is homophobia? WHAT ( ... )

First of all, Sue Perkins is my queen!

Second of all, what you say, it is the truth. I love how Sherlock fandom views itself as champion warriors of social justice now. Lol-we're-not-gay jokes mean they really are gay for each other (and how dare you think otherwise, don't you know Gatiss is gay omg). Irene Adler is a woman so no1curr anyway.

And CBS really missed out on casting Lucy Liu as a mystical tea-serving girl (who then dies) or a crazy acrobatic dragon-lady (who then dies). I mean, why can't they emulate the far superior BBC Sherlock?

Wow. So that's pretty gross.

Though I do feel the need to state my complaint on the casting again, which is that I want TWO women. Come on! Sorry Jonny Lee Miller, I'm sure you're great, but TWO women are better than one! (But also kind of if not that then I also want Liu as Holmes really badly. I'll gladly look forward to watching her as Watson though).

Yes! Why not? Two women! If you wanna do it differently, better go all the way, I say.

A woman be Holmes? How dare you! The super genius archetype belongs strictly to those with testicles (see The Mentalist, House, Luther, etc.). And how is she supposed to solve crime when she's pmsing all over the place?

But seriously, I get you; two women would be awesome and the best idea for a remake, but you know that's never going to happen (and fandom would be outraged all the same).

I've been out of fandom stuff for so long, this is news to me.

Ok, my first thought was, oh no, the Americans and them jumping in on the bandwagon. A female Watson? Why change a good thing?

But then I thought about it, and there's already 2 white guy Holmes/Watson running about, I think that's enough. Also, it's Lucy Liu! Women should be automatically happy about this. I don't want any Holmes/Watson subtext in this case. I want Watson to be kick-ass and non-impressed all the time.

White-boy slash. Yes, as much as I love it, I think we've had enough. Time for something new.

(Thank you for filtering fandom for me. I don't think I would've survived!)

I don't know what Sherlockians are on about anyway. They hated Elementary from its conception, so can't they just ignore it? The Sherlock fandom's vitriol is so... disproportionate to the level of offense committed that I'm predisposed to like the American version now. Also, being Asian, I like the idea of an Asian woman is filling the shoes of a kick-ass role traditionally given to white men. I hope she doesn't have a relationship with Sherlock either, but I hope she does have some fun outside of work.

I had no idea there was such a vitriolic response to it. And there I was feeling chuffed that Lucy Liu had been cast as Watson. I may have to repost what you said, because, THIS.
