Computer Question!

Those of you on my f-list that may know; what on earth does it mean when you start up your computer and you wind up with just that cursor blinking in the upper left corner of the screen and the HD has stopped even thinking? And THEN when you finally just "reboot" it (yes by pushing and just holding down power) to get to the HP title screen (after ( Read more... )

The problem is definitely with booting. Did you have a bootable CD (like a Windows install CD) in the try? Or a disk in the floppy drive? The BIOS can be a weird and flaky thing, a dark and arcane art that should die already. Probably not a virus.

If all else fails, you should turn to worship the dark gods of chaos. They are strong.

I have cats, I already worship chaos ;)

I don't know if I even have a bootable CD (which of course means, no, no cd or floppy in the drive - I don't even have a floppy drive ON this particular computer - which I don't think I noticed before LOL). Like I said, I went and rearranged the "order" of the boot and then it managed to start up. But of course, I'm afraid now that I misordered something, I imagine there's a reason it would say that the Floppy boots first, then CD, THEN HD? I don't know.

I also don't know why it would all of a sudden go "heeey, I'm not booting up" So if tis not a virus... is there something else I should check / do?

I will look into that. I haven't used the CD drive in a whiiiile so if it's worn out after only about a year of not really using, well dunno. ;)

I'm here to pick on Tug for no good reason.

No, wait. I'm here to second the external HD thought. I've had my computer lockup at boot trying to read them before, and turning them off fixes the problem.

No external HDs, though I wish ;) And no CD in the drive; to be quite honest, haven't used it in a while. Like months.

*dies* now I'm afraid to turn it off.
