This is beautiful, I hope she and Katie have a happy future together and that her family will someday understand.

If I'm not mistaken, these girls showed up in an earlier story, too. Nothing really sinister lurking in the back of this one. :)

I think Melissa has a great future to look forward to, though as a parent I feel pangs for the fact that it will probably happen much farther from home than her parents would like.

I liked the feverish rationalizing of Katie that seems to happen near the end, the way that it likely would for Melissa, coming from an altogether different background. It's pretty sweet and sincere.
