Race

Back when I was a little Firstie at MHC I signed up to be on the mailing lists for tons of clubs, one of them called "Debunking Whiteness," which is basically a club trying to make white people more aware of racial problems. Now I never actually went to a meeting (or a meeting for any of the other clubs for that matter . . . God, I was lazy), but ( Read more... )

Don't get me started on how much I find the word "exotic" not offensive, because I'm sure 95% of the college will find me racist. The fact that I'm studying German doesn't help. And it might be a little offensive, but goddamnit. It has always been a good word for me. :|

Secondly I agree w/ your mentioning of subtitles. I can't understand a lot of British dialects, and don't stand a chance against many Caribbean ones. The sprache is totally different, and I don't understand why it should be labeled as racist to want subtitles on something you can't understand if you are using it to learn. :(

I fucking hate that group. I'm so sick of hearing how I'm so privileged and that because I'm white I've automatically gotten everything I've ever wanted in life, without trying, just because I'm white and I must be wealthy and successful. It doesn't occur to them that I'm poor and my parents aren't successful or intelligent? It doesn't occur to them that there's a giant demographic of intl students and 'tokens' from strange places that are a lot richer (and get more aid than me) or not as intelligent as a lot of the kids say from MA or CT that are just as worthy but don't get in because they're too 'plain ( ... )

I'm not trying to imply that I understand what it's like to be of a different race, but having experienced life as an ethnic monority and been on the receiving end of racism I find it a lot better when someone just comes out and asks me where I'm from than either just staring or assuming.

I've got nothing against you beautiful yanks, but it does piss me off when people assume I'm American, it doesn't happen too often, but I'd much rather someone just asked than assumed.

I don't think race is as huge an issue in the UK as in the US, we have our problems, but since most people come from the commonwealth anyway, they're usually accepted as British quite quickly.

I know I've pigeonholed, but my head hurts...

i love u and hate when people of my own background.. kind of... i am mixed as hell so i dont really understand the point of this
"well, except for black people [and yes, I do say black people, because not all black people living/studying in America are American, and therefore cannot be called "African-American"], because black people "all come from Africa" . . . there are, of course, no "ethnically mixed" black people out there *rolls eyes*)."

but i hate when the first one u meant happens. it always happens mainly in english classes and its like ok... why dont we ask some one who knows about it.. the minority in the class cant answer all the questions..everyone has had different experiences.

love ya
