Prompt #345 - Mud Title: A Muddy Reputation
Author:
chessie_reevesWord Count: 436
Three-year-old Reeves* grins happily as she gazes in wonder at all the new sights she has never seen until that very moment. She is on vacation with her father and he has taken her abroad to meet her grandparents and other family members. They are standing in the in the middle of the rice fields at the family farm in the province where there is a little shelter and cooking area.
Reeves loves barbecue and wants to help her uncle man the grill. In typical fashion, she is shooed away on the pretext that she might burn her. Pouting, she drifts over to where her two-year-old cousin Rho is sleeping. She gives the cot a subtle kick, hoping to wake the girl so that they could play. No luck; Reeves scuttles away under the pointed looks of her aunts.
It had rained recently and the trenches that were a part of the field were filled lovely mud and water. Reeves uses a stick to scrape up mud to draw pictures in the grass. It isn't terribly satisfying and she is not impressed with the results. She longs to dip her hands in the oozing mess, but was fastidious enough to not want to dirty her cute green overalls and frilly white socks.
She sighs despondently. All that lovely mud going to waste when someone could be playing in it. A flash of movement causes her to turn her head and she notices that Rho has woken from her nap. Reeves is suddenly inspired by a flash of absolute brilliance. There was no reason for Rho not to enjoy the benefits of mud.
Without giving her plan a second thought, Reeves hops off the boulder she had been sitting on and rushes up to her cousin. Smiling, she pushes the toddler into the gorgeous shiny mud. Reeves doesn't quite understand what she did to cause all hell to break loose, but there is a lot of shouting and scolding and even more shouting.
Rho is sobbing and the aunts are fretting and fussing over her. As punishment, Reeves has to stand in the corner of shelter in isolation. Saddness. She doesn't understand why her relatives think she is a spoiled brat..
It has been years since since the incident, but it is a tale that is always mentioned at family reunions and holidays. And to this day, no one still doesn't understand that Reeves thought she was doing her cousin a marvelous favor by sharing all that wonderful mud with her.
