that giant meme.
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Short, (4’10”) skinny, and sort of mangy. Mean people compare her to a rat. A cute one, though. She sort of looks like a 12 year old who began to grow into her boobs and curves not too long ago.
2. How old is she? 16
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch? Think Napoleon, but less pompous. She’s straight-backed and confident in a way that makes her seem taller than she actually is.
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Her fitness is nothing to scream about. She hates sweating, and refuses to exercise. But she’s not in terrible health.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Fluid? I guess. She moves really easily. But… not graceful or anything. She’s not combative at all, so when she attempts to fight, you’ll be able to spot how relatively amateurish her movements are.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror? She’s not very attractive conventionally. She looks like a mouse; tiny features, thin nose, big eyes, brown all over. She doesn’t smile much, which doesn’t help. But screw conventional beauty standards; she likes how she looks.
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Light/medium brown. Clear.
8. Describe her hair: colour, texture, style. Very long, (it reaches her knees) dark and kind of wavy. She usually wears it in one long plait down her back. Sometimes she divides it into a couple dozen plaits. Sometimes Zaria will do cane rows for her. Very very rarely will she just let it all out.
9. What colour are her eyes? Honey-ish.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Her eyesight isn’t all that great, but the orphanage can’t afford glasses, much less contacts, so she’s learnt to live with it. Also, I guess her ability would count here? She can control her hair and the movements of her hair like one would control arms and legs. Yep. It’s mostly useless? Her hair is really strong and very hard to cut, though.
11. What are her chief tension centres? Doesn’t get tense /boss
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colours, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit? She lives in an orphanage, and thus has to wear what she’s given… but she flat out will not wear bright colours? She gets treated a bit better than the other kids at the orphanage, because of her mother’s hefty donation, so she’s able to request things sometimes. (Not that she gets it all the time.) She likes dark clothes, or at least pale or neutral colours. There’s a healthy enough variation in the types of clothes she wears; jeans and t-shirts, dresses, skirts, tops, etc. All of it is pretty casual, though; she has no use for dressy clothes. She wears big black ribbons in her hair all the time.
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them? For the most part, yeah, because the orphanage has more clothes suited for small children. Most of her wardrobe consists of clothes for ten year old girls. And yeah, she’s comfortable in them. Clothes for her are so not a Thing.
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences? n/a
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Panties.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Medium pitched, and clear. She doesn’t sound half as sarcastic and cutting as she actually is.
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate? She has a sort of drawl to the way she speaks. Sometimes, she speaks in a sort of… hm. I hesitate to say sing-song. But it can be lazy-ish and mocking-ish.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? She’s a Trinidadian, and thus has a Trinidadian accent. You can find examples of said accent
here and
here. (In the latter, the girl is imitating how an older T’dadian woman would speak.)
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency? Trinidadian English, Standard English. A fair bit of Hindi.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Sure, she code-switches as necessary, once she’s in the mood. It’s standard procedure to speak in Standard English when you’re dealing with foreigners (those from outside of the Caribbean, to be specific) but Shalini does not exist to make foreigners’ lives easier, and if she doesn’t want to code-switch, lol, she ain’t gonna. She doesn’t ever really have cause to speak Hindi.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words? Yeah, sure, I guess.
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? Um. She’s a good speaker, when she wants to speak? I don’t want to describe her as eloquent, but yes, words come easily to her. And gosh, it doesn’t ever really change… she doesn’t get frazzled or inarticulate like other people do, and she rarely lets her emotions get the best of her.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart? She’s very very smart. She doesn’t have much patience for school-work, but she likes puzzles and brain-work solving things. And she reads a lot. She doesn’t have much in the way of street-smarts; her early childhood was very sheltered. All that she’s learnt about that aspect of life, she’s learnt from Jamie, and Kiel, to some extent.
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate? She deliberates.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Very much logical.
4. What kind of education has the character had? Juuuust orphanage education. There are like, one or two teachers there who teach them the basics of Mathematics, English, and History (with a concentrated focus on Trinidad and Tobago’s history, of course), and several other subjects as well.
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about? No areas of expertise, really. She just likes puzzles and tactical stuff and thinky things. She’s a pro at chess and other strategy games. She likes to learn in general.
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? Uhh, sort of an introvert, I guess, but... not really. (lol what kind of answer was that.)
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Pretty chill, mostly. She gets super exasperated with stupid things and stupid people. She’s very dry and witty and laid-back about things in general. Has a tendency to make sarcastic, cutting remarks at other people’s expense, but it’s mostly meant in good fun. She’s pretty even-tempered on the whole; she’s not the type of person to let her emotions get the best of her, and she isn’t prone to mood swings.
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? She’s mostly like w/e.
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react? Depends on the situation! React more than act, though.
10. Which is her default: fight or flight? Fight.
11. Describe the character's sense of humour. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humour? Bathroom humour? Pranks? Yup. It’s not immediately evident, but she has a great sense of humour. Not guffaw haha, more sly and sarcastic. For the most part, though, she leaves the jokes to Onika.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them? n/a
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person? Her mother pretty much left her to her own devices as a child, and that taught her to be self-sufficient, and not to ever fall back on depending on anyone. If your mother is going to ignore you, can’t expect much out of the rest of the world, right? Having friends was weird at first, because of that.
14. What does she fear? The dark. She sleeps with a night-light in her corner of the room. Don’t you dare mock her about it.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations? She doesn’t know yet. She wouldn’t mind getting out of the orphanage, though, and seeing things and places.
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her? That her mother almost owned the orphanage, back in the day? That would be slightly uncomfortable and basically just a conversation she doesn’t wanna have.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents. She never knew her father, and her mother never talked about him. Her mother was a wealthy recluse, and they lived together in a mansion in a secluded area. Most people knew about her mother, Seena Ramkhalawansingh, but no one knew she had a daughter. And she pretty much acted like she didn’t have one too. Other than a nurse to see about her when she was a baby/toddler, and someone to deliver meals to her when she was a bit older, Shalini was left completely alone, to her own devices, in a little section of the house. She knew little about the world outside, other than the things she saw on TV. She never had a relationship with her mother; she barely ever saw her. Shalini just sort of learned to survive by herself, how to occupy herself and how to not need anyone, as much as she could. When her mother died when she was 6, it was a week before she smelt it, and called 990 (911). Her mother’s lawyers didn’t even know she had a daughter, and she wasn’t even mentioned in the will. All of Seena’s money was left to charitable organisations and stuff. There were no other relatives, and no one wanted Shalini, so after a few months of being bounced around, they just stuck her in the orphanage that her mother had left money to, and set up a fun for her for when she was older. Shalini doesn’t resent her mother particularly; she finds it hard to resent someone she barely even knew. Sometimes she wonders WHY her mother did that, but… never for long. She’ll never know, because her mother’s dead, and her father’s awol. She’s kind of apathetic about it all.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? She was an only child.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand? Nope. Sometimes she gets curious about her father’s family, but not often.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them? Her best friends at the orphanage: Onika, Jamie and Zaria. They were her first friends ever, and although she linefaces at them all the time and tells them they’re stupid all the time and rolls her eyes at them all the time, she only ever has fun with them, and loves them all so much.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? Onika. Lol. This girl is so fucking annoying, but she loves her anyway. They met through Jamie, at the orphanage, and Niki immediately started horsing around and trying to get her to laugh, and despite herself, Shalini thought she was funny, if stupid. She finds her really easy to get along with, in general, and won’t say it out loud, but she loves joining in on Niki’s stupid pranks and just generally hanging out with her. She seriously seriously loves her.
6. Does she have other close friends? Jamie, who is chill and laidback and cool like she is, and Zaria, who is too sweet for her own good. Kiel, who is not as much of an idiot as he makes himself seem, is fun to tease, and always has good weed.
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people? No, Shalini’s not much of a friend maker. It’s not that she has trouble getting along with people. She just doesn’t make the effort most of the time, since she figures she has friends already and doesn’t need more?? She could if she wanted to, though.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? LOL friends obviously.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once? Single, and no.
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? No.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest? She doesn’t really get crushes... I think she feels an affection for Onika that goes a bit beyond best-friendship, but isn’t romantic either?? She also tends to feel strongly towards people with sharp minds. A lot of these people tend to be fictional HEH.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner? She doesn’t really look! She figured out a little while ago that she’s a panromantic asexual (not that she expresses it in those words) and she knows there is very little probability of anyone wanting to be romantically involved with her if she doesn’t want to ever have sex, and isn’t too enthusiastic about kissing and all that other stuff either. So she just doesn’t bother. If she ends up feeling attraction towards someone she tries to squish it. Because… yeah. Romance appeals to her, unlike sex, but she feels like if she gets into a relationship, (even a simple chaste one) most people would expect more than she’s willing to give. And then she'd have to smack a bitch.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any? Nope nope nope. She decided from a pretty young age that she never wants kids.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies? Lol no not really. She hates Mrs. Watson, the orphanage owner, on principle, though.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the
Kinsey scale? X. As said before, asexual and panromantic. She doesn’t care about gender when it comes to romantic attraction, she just doesn’t want your bits near hers.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her? Gross, pretty sure she never wants to do it ever, no thanks, utterly uninteresting, completely unappealing, etc.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? n/a
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does she fit type? She was born on February 14th (lol irony or something???) and is an Aquarius. Some of the criteria from
this site really fits her, like original, inventive, intellectual and independent. And on the negative side, she can be pretty unemotional and detached too. When the descriptions get more detailed though… no, it doesn’t seem to really fit her. I’ll hold off on the Chinese Zodiac for now, since I’m not fixed on what year I want her to be born yet. So far, it’s tentatively 2180, so it’ll be a tentative dragon, which fits her a bit. Shalini herself doesn’t really give a shit about horoscopes.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life? Agnostic. She knows that her mother was Hindu, but it’s no never mind to her. She sort of side-eyes religion on the whole, but she doesn’t have any problems with it.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? I suppose. She’s moral because she knows it’s the ‘right thing’ to do, but her friends are the most important people in her life, and she’d do anything for them. And she’s not shy about crossing lines for them. But in general, yeah, she won’t seriously hurt or maim anyone in anyway unless they’re asking for it, or unless she needs to do it to survive or protect someone she loves.
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? Indifferent.
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them? She thinks sexual people are a little gross? /kanyeshrug, but it’s not like she has any serious prejudice against them. She’s a bit xenophobic, and considering what the US and Britain and France and company have done to her country… yeah, I’d say she’s justified. Her feelings on the matter aren’t anywhere near as strong as Jamie’s, though.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? Comfortable? In light of the fact that it was her mother’s contribution that really got the orphanage some money to fix up the place, afford more utilities and amenities and stuff, she’s treated just a bit better than all the other children. It’s still a really poor orphanage, though, and a lot of the time, she rejects the special treatment that they try to give her. (Unless they give her more food, in which case she shares with the her friends.) She has a trust fund full of money that she can't touch atm, bah.
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her? Well, she lived in the lap of luxury when she was younger, but since she was alone and basically took care of herself, it wasn’t like, the best or anything? She much prefers her life now.
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others? She shares a medium sized room with Jamie, Zaria and Onika at the orphanage. There are two pairs of bunk beds, and she sleeps on top of one, with Onika, her bestie, on the bottom. It’s pretty sparsely furnished, and none of them have personal possessions, really. She spends a fair amount of time in there; she doesn’t particularly like the outdoors. She's not messy or anything, but doesn't do a good job of keeping the place tidy either. She leaves that to Zaria.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on? Lol. She does get a tiny bit of money from Mrs. Watson every once in a while. She gives some of it to Kiel and tells him to buy snacks and weed, which she shares with the others. (The snacks, not the weed. None of the other girls smoke - Zaria in particular is very >:( about it - so it’s one of the few things that she and Kiel do together.) The rest of her money she saves, very carefully.
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else? n/a
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time? She likes tactical games. She’s very good at chess and other games of strategy, and kicks Zaria’s ass often. She also likes puzzles and brainteasers... stuff like that. She likes to read. She also likes to smoke with Kiel from time to time. (To say ‘get high with Kiel’ would be an overstatement, since marijuana and other drugs (recreational and otherwise) don’t really affect 2nd Gen Humans like they do the 1st Gens. Medication for them needs to be stronger, while weed only packs about 70% of the punch.)
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? She lives in a poor orphanage, remember. So, in general, she has to eat what she gets. And that’s not a lot, so no, she wouldn’t intentionally skip meals, not when they all get so little. Kiel sometimes brings them beer; she doesn’t enjoy it that much, but she drinks from time to time.
