"Block 2 needs to connect with Block 4" YunHo mused as he looked over the instructions.
"Yun, honey, it goes like this" JaeJoong said, connecting two blocks together easily. YunHo could take three weeks to put together a table that would take JaeJoong at most, an hour.
"Jae sweetie, be patient"
"I really would like this crib set up before the baby is born" JaeJoong countered, rubbing his baby bump.
While YooChun had taken a hand's off approach to JunSu's pregnancy, YunHo was the exact opposite, engulfing himself into every parenting book that had been published since Bambi had made her debut. JaeJong appreciated that his husband was genuinely excited, but his obsession with being a good parent had caused unforeseen problems. Like how he was going to be induced in a little over two weeks, and the nursery was still not finished.
"I'm being thorough; you wouldn't want our baby girl sleeping in anything that wasn't safe" YunHo retorted, suddenly remembering what he had sworn to talk to JaeJoong about. "Actually, do you think we got the right crib? I mean like look at the bars, it's bigger than ChangMin's. What if she gets her head stuck into her crib and we can't get it out and....."
JaeJoong rolled his eyes, trying hard not to shove YunHo aside and lock him up until their daughter finally makes her appearance.
"Honey, we really can't wait a couple of months. We don't have a couple of weeks" JaeJoong interrupted. He was trying to be patient but sometimes it was hard.
"Fine. Then I will finish setting up this death trap that you are so content on condemning our daughter to" YunHo said annoyingly. JaeJoong didn't understand that perfection took time, he never thought towards the finish.
"Can I have some juice, please?" ChangMin, YooChun and JunSu's five year old said - his two horny parent are celebrating their sixth anniversary and decided to put him here - peeking into the room. JaeJoong nodded, grateful for any reason to not have to watch YunHo wage war on the crib.
The five year old grabbed his hand and led him to the kitchen, laughing as JaeJoong picked him up and set him onto the counter. "What kind of juice do you want?"
"Apple!" ChangMin shouted excitedly. He leaned over and rubbed JaeJoong's large stomach. When he was told that he was going to have a baby sister, ChangMin was ecstatic. He always asking about what they could play together when she was born. The five year old often complain playing alone as his appa and omma seem busy all the time. Only JaeJoong knew what the word 'busy' meant.
As JaeJoong poured the juice, he suddenly had a brilliant idea.
"Yun honey, how about you and ChangMin go get us some lunch? I don't feel like cooking today" JaeJoong hollered, hoping his husband would take the bait. "You can work on the crib when you get back"
"Alright" YunHo agreed, stepping into the kitchen, grabbing ChangMin's hand. "Come on, buddy, let's go"
JaeJoong watched from the window until he saw the car pull out of the driveway. As soon as it was out of sight, he was off. Jogging into the room, he began placing together similar pieces, easily finding one and connecting them to the other. He had it nicely placed - just enough to quicken the process without YunHo being able to tell he had done anything. It was easy assembling, he didn't need the directions. He laughed at the mould of tools that YunHo had hauled in there. In less than a half an hour, he had half of the crib finished. Hearing the car engine driving through the driveway, he raced back to the kitchen.
"Hey" JaeJoong said as the kitchen door opened, YunHo and ChangMin carrying in some take-out. JaeJoong played with his hair absently, hoping that he hadn't done too much. He knew that YunHo hated it that he was better with tools than he was.
"We got you chicken and broccoli, hope that's okay" YunHo told him, afraid that he had chosen something completely out of JaeJoong's craving range.
The last few months had been erratic in the Jung household, tears often being shed over too much garlic, not enough salt, and food containing shrimp. Up until nine months ago, YunHo had never seen JaeJoong cry, and now, hopefully it sticks that way.
"Yeah, that's fine" JaeJong lied. While he was tempted to go flappy, he decided that after going behind YunHo's back and putting up the crib, he could put on a happy face. Still JaeJoong would kill for some desserts.
But YunHo read right through him, after being married for three years, he was getting pretty good at telling when JaeJoong was lying. "What did you do?"
"Nothing" JaeJoong said, giving YunHo a winning smile. He sincerely hoped that YunHo wouldn't inquire further.
YunHo stood there for a moment, weighing his options. He really did want to know what JaeJoong was up to, but if he could get JaeJoong to eat something without breaking into tears, he'd take it. "I'll grab some drinks from the fridge. ChangMin, wash your hands"
JaeJoong smiled to himself in triumph. YunHo didn't fail to notice JaeJoong's throwing his arms in the air. "What?"
"I just......like broccoli?" JaeJoong said lamely.
"Yeah, I'm sure that's it" YunHo laughed as ChangMin returned to the table. "Listen, I noticed that the faucet is leaking, so I'll try to fix it after I finish with the crib"
JaeJoong immediately began cataloguing what needed to be fixed so that he could do it before YunHo managed to destroy his kitchen again. Last time YunHo had attempted to 'fix' anything related to plumbing, they had spent two weeks without water before he let JaeJoong call in a professional, and JaeJoong had to stay home from work that day just to 'wait for the plumber' which meant he spent the day in his sweats as he quickly fixed the mess YunHo had made with his wrench.
"Earth to Jae" YunHo laughed as he noticed the distant look in his husband's eyes.
"Oh, sorry honey, I was just thinking" JaeJoong said, shaking his head to bring himself back to reality, unwilling to let YunHo to see his true motives.
"About what?" YunHo asked, prying.
JaeJoong was at a loss, then suddenly suppressed a grin. All he had to do, really, was to think of how much he had really wanted desserts and the tears just flowed. "It's nothing"
"Oh, Jae...sweetheart, I'm sorry. What's wrong?" YunHo immediately fell into the loving husband role, and though he had not a single clue as to what set JaeJoong off this time, he was certain it had something to do with him - it usually did.
"I just..." JaeJoong sniffed - the best for added effect. "....it's silly"
"Sweetheart, how can I make it better if you won't tell me?" YunHo consoled him.
"I just really wanted desserts" JaeJoong admitted, feeling somewhat guilty for using his tears, but once again, he had the greater good in mind - the kitchen.
"Well, I'll go get you some, then" YunHo insisted.
"Oh, Yunnie, you don't have to. I know how hard it is to -"
"If it makes you stop crying, dear"
As he ran out the door, tugging the reluctant ChangMin behind him, JaeJoong crept into the nursery and grabbed the wrench.
He quickly tightened the faucet, fixing the small leak underneath the sink while he was at it. It was really quite amazing how often he fixed things without YunHo knowing it. He fought the urge to finish the crib, he couldn't blow his secret by doing too much at once. Remembering that he heard YunHo mention fixing the lamp in their bedroom, he hurried and grabbed a pair of pliers. The circuit was easy to find, JaeJoong conquered the lamp in less then five minutes. Hearing YunHo walk through the door, he walked over.
"I love you!" JaeJoong exclaimed, hugging his husband, with ChangMin mimicked a 'puking' expression.
"I love you too. If I'd known you were that easy, I would have bought you some years ago" YunHo teased. He was that in love with him, even then.
"Now, why didn't you?" JaeJoong laughed, grabbing the delicious dumpling.
"You were dating someone else" YunHo said.
"That's true too" JaeJoong nodded.
JaeJoong didn't like remembering the people he dated before YunHo, they had all been losers. It was the first Valentine's Day he'd been single. Ever. Always having boyfriend and girlfriend after the other, he wasn't sure what he was going to do. He had no idea what single people did on the greeting card holiday. Until he met JunSu and his husband, YooChun, who introduced his best friend, YunHo. The latter invited him to play games instead of dealing with everyone's romances. That was the first time he noticed YunHo's third grade crush on him, and now, it was hard to think of him as anything less than the best person JaeJoong had ever known. YunHo may not be good with tools, but JaeJoong would pick him any day of the week.
JaeJoong gratefully speared one of the delicious apple dumpling and plopped it into his mouth. As he chewed, he watched his sweet husband carefully.
"I think our sink fixed itself again" YunHo mused as he turned on the water. JaeJoong muffled a giggle as he watched YunHo stare at the sink in confusion.
"Oh" JaeJoong replied, nonchalantly. He'd have thought that YunHo would be used to their appliances 'magically fixing' themselves by now. They'd been doing so for almost seven months.
"Well, I should get back to the crib building. We wouldn’t want baby Bambi to be born without the proper welcoming" YunHo laughed lightly, walking into the nursery. "Wow, I must be further along than I had thought. I think it’s going to take me only fifteen more minutes"
JaeJoong smiled to himself, knowing that if it was him, it would only take five. "That's great Yunnie"
"And you were worried that we wouldn't get it done in time" YunHo teased.
"I should have had more faith in you. I'm sorry" JaeJoong lied, walking in after him. He’d spare YunHo his masculinity - for now.
