Please do not ask how I came across this composter, but it is TERRIFYING. It looks like it would come to life in the middle of the night and terrorize me in a particularly arachnid way. ( cut to spare you unnecessary terror )
It kind of reminds me of the big contraption in The Incredibles.
Our composter is about 10 feet of wire screen attached in a cylinder. Air + sun = good components for compost, I don't understand why there are all these fancy schmancy machines out there. Except maybe that they are prettier (or more terrifying) for you and your neighbors to look at.
My parents have a big wire screen compost pile, and then two plastic box things with lids. I think the lids are handy if you have critters who might be attracted to your food waste. From what I can tell, the main draw of the roundish bins is they are easier to turn, so your compost gets done faster. For those in a hurry.
Incidentally, I think I am inadvertently composting in a pot on my balcony.
