The year 2016 proved that the Democratic Party has lost its way. Their actions proved that their #1 priority was what was in the best interests of the Clintons, not what was in the best interests our country. Thus they strangled Sander's campaign and stuck us with a candidate who was so unexciting and so out of touch with the mood of the country ( Read more... )

I'm a reluctant supporter of Ellison, because of his anti-Semitism (it seems to not just be about Israel, for him.) But change HAS to happen in the party, or we are doomed. We may be doomed anyway, of course, thanks to That Man, but I won't say we ARE doomed until we actually are.

Certainly the Democrats need to get their act together. (I've no idea whether Ellison is the way to do it.)

And you're right that the down-ballot races have been withering, but that started well before 2016. The Democrats seem to be contracting to huge majorities in "blue islands" and minorities everywhere else, and that's not enough. Part of it, I suspect, is that both the leadership and the activists have been thinking that demographic change will hand them permanent power automatically and got lazy, but swing voters have been leaking away faster than demography has been gaining them voters.

OTOH, fixing it can't be that hard; eight years ago Obama won handily, and came near to winning states like Missouri which are now considered solid-red. The Democrats need to get out there in the swing states and districts and ask people what they should do; peel 5% away from the Republicans (Obama did it!) and they're back in power.

Thus I wish I had a real say in electing who is running the Democratic Party.Well, what are the processes ( ... )
