Wow, I haven't properly updated for almost a year now! Sorry folks, my attention wandered away, but I'm trying to get back into things. I'll try to update the past year in brief, though I warn you about the craziness beforehand!
Hmm, lets see... I went to China and Korea last summer for two months, but I blogged that. After I got back, I shipped off to the University of Maryland. My parents concocted a scheme where they would buy a house in Maryland so that I could get instate tuition and they could get some sort of tax break. I'm not sure how it works, but my dad's a lawyer and my mom's an accountant, so I won't argue. (Random lawyer joke: A man walks into a bar and says "I just got back from my divorce settlement. Lawyers are assholes." Another man at the bar jumps up and says "I object!" The first man asks "Why? Are you a lawyer?" The second man replies, "No, I'm an asshole!" hehe) Anyways, I ended up with a split level, 3 bedroom house near campus that I've been renting out (or trying to, anyways).
I met a girl back in August 2005 or so, but after I got back, we started hanging out alot more and it got more serious, except that she didn't trust men and was afraid of relationships. That craziness lasted on and off until recently. I think I'm attracted to girls with issues. Or maybe I'm just masochistic. Eh. Extra twist: my ex-girlfriend (Ella) is trying to pair me up with someone new, while she herself searches for a new Beau. Ahh, the awkwardness.
Shortly before I started at UMD, I joined a search and rescue group located on campus called the Potomac Valley Rescue Group (the acroynym is PVRG, but when pronounced, everyone says it sounds like pervert. bleh). I really enjoy it since it mixes outdoorsy stuff with medical stuff, and it also gives me an incentive to get my butt into shape. I recently got voted President of PVRG, not really because I'm better at anything, but more like I was the only one eligible to be president >.> My secretary and vice president are leaving when the fall semester begins, and my treasurer leaves in the spring semester. So either we'll have a huge recruitment drive and grab a bunch of undergraduates who can hold office positions, or by the end of next year I'll hold the position of supreme Overlord of PVRG.
Hmm... oh, over winter break I went with about 30ish other Maryland students down to Ocean Springs, Mississippi which was about 2 miles away from Biloxi and help with hurricane relief and tearing down old, moldy houses. We begged for about $3000 to fund the trip, even though most of the people were assholes (not to be confused with lawyers) and didn't give us anything. "We're finished donating!" and "Are they still asking for money?" ...Asshats. Anyways, before we began tearing down houses, they warned us that these were old houses and many had asbestos (yay!) and that since everything was water logged, they have a big problem with "black mold" that can infest your respiratory system and have sex in your lungs till you die (double yay!), so that is what my new pic is all about, with the respirator goodness and all.
While we were down there, we were sponsored and housed by a Lutheran church. This was a bad match, because after a long day of tearing down a house down to its studs and foundations, we would (instead of attending worship and daily prayer) go drinking. We found ourselves a cozy sports bar and went at it. Then we'd have to sneak back into the church whilst drunk... difficult, yet amusing. This one time when we were working on a house, a 4 year old across the street got hit by his mom as she pulled into the driveway. I ran over and explained I was an EMT. At first I didn't think it was that bad because he was running around and crying, but then he started spitting up blood and bleeding out of his ear (with CSF) and his left temporal bone was crushed about an inch into his head. The ambulance came and he ended up doing alright, but that night, I got wasted. Wasted.
Hmm... currently, my dilemma is whether or not to stick with my current major of Biology, or to switch to Anthropology with a specialty in Bioanth. I'm sure I have a chance of getting into medical school with either major, but I feel its just a issue of if med school falls through. I'm more interested in Anth, but I'm not sure if I should do it as a major or just a hobby. Bleh. Decisions, decision. I generally feel that things are getting better. Oh, except that my next door neighbor is crazy and mean. She's and old lady who is crazy enough to be mean, but not enough to be distracted by flying monkeys and leave you alone. Bah, and she's always walking around in the street, talking to herself. But besides that, everything is looking up. =) <- happy Sam.
Happy Sam out.
