He didn't know why he was their bodies were press closely together. He didn't know why hands much younger than his were tightly holding onto his arms. He didn't know why he was lightly holding the genuis' wet face in both hands. Most importantly, Hotch didn't know why he was kissing Reid. All Hotch knew was that one minute Reid had been crying, and the next they were kissing slowly. There was no lust nor passion, just comfort and something else.

It was awkward and confusing and so right. They fit together perfectly; almost as though they were made for each other, but neither man really believed those kinds of silly fairy tales. The idea that two were made solely for each other sounded ridiculous and strange to the other. Yet here they were, kissing because something in the pit of his stomach told him to. After a long moment that was too short, Hotch broke the kiss apart and let his hands drop to Reid's shoulders.

Neither man spoke, both unsure of what to say the other. It was long before Reid gripped tighten again, as though he would start crying again, and Hotch couldn't help but pull him into a hug. What else could he do? Not only had they failed to save a little girl, and then Reid got a phone call as both had entered their shared room for the night.
Hotch didn't know what the person on the other end of the conversation had said, but it wasn't long after that when Reid had begun to sob quietly. He had asked the younger man what had happened, but Reid said it was nothing as he tried is best to dry his eyes. Hotch knew he was lying, and Reid knew he knew. However, Reid didn't want to think about anything at that moment. That was when Hotch stepped up to him, grabbed his face lightly in his hands and kissed him.

Now here they were, holding onto each other, waiting. Waiting to see what the other would do. Waiting for an excuse to speak. Waiting for something to happened, and they didn't have to wait long.

Hotch watched as tears began to fall from Reid's eyes before pulling him into a hug. It was strong and firm and just what Reid needed. He buried his head in the broad shoulder, wetting the jacket covering it. Any other moment, any other day, and Reid would have felt bad about doing so, but not then. Even though the tears stop and the sobs lessened, Hotch held the younger man still. "Are you okay?" Reid shook his slightly, barely enough for Hotch noticed, but he did. "What's wrong?"

Reid didn't answer right away, but when he did it was barely above a whisper. "My mom, she..." Hotch felt his stomach drop and pulled him closer. Even though Reid couldn't bring himself to say it, he didn't need to. Hotch knew what that phone call had been about. Reid let out a shuttering breath, trying not to lose control. Hotch just held him tighter and spoke as reassuringly as he could. "It's okay. I'm here."
