You're pretty observant. You've clearly picked up a lot watching others. Yes, they aren't directly out to get you, but they have no problem endangering your life OR killing you if they think it will get them what they want- it's unlikely, but not impossible. All they really care about is what they think they're supposed to care about- beyond that, they've got nothing to cling to.
