I've never had a problem with compulsory homeland military training, and I don't think most people do; Switzerland, Israel, plenty of countries do that, and I think most young people and parents would consider it an excellent introduction to civil service.
The rub happens when kids are drafted to go overseas to fight for a cause not their own. You can argue "slippery slope" if you want, but I think there's a world of difference between those concepts.

And confused. Because I've been listening to conservatives proposing compulsory civil service (whether it be military or the choice between military and some other government-oriented service) for a long, long time now.
Why is it suddenly bad when a Democrat proposes it?
