I danced a traditional dance at the Mito Komon Matsuri in Mito the first weekend in Japan at my town. We danced for the head branch of the prefectural bank and there was a large contingency of foreigners, both Western and Chinese/other-Asian. We were placed at the end of the group with a large banner declaring our status. Most of us learned the dance half an hour before the matsuri started so we were learning on our own. It was a moving parade. We danced for four hours. Twenty minutes on, ten off, for what felt like A MILE! My feet hurt. But the bank people took good care of us! We were followed by our own supporters who provided us with drinks and food. The Chinese girls had their own personal supporters or host mothers who took care of us ALL. They were soo sweet! We placed in the top 10 though. We were probably the most photographed group of the entire matsuri. I can't wait to do it again!
