Sally smiled happily to herself as she pulled the dessert fork out of her mouth. She knew she could possibly get in trouble if she was caught, but she honestly did not care. She was just so fed up and frustrated with everything that she just needed to do something to relax. So she had snuck down to the kitchens and had succeeded in finding a large slice of chocolate cake.

She had to give the chefs credit... they knew how to make chocolate cake, and make it well. Every mouthful just melted in her mouth and she was in heaven every time the fork entered her mouth. It was rich and moist, and mouth-watering enough just to look at! It still was, even though it was gradually disappearing. It was just what Sally needed though and she was loving every minute of it.

She had just put another forkful into her mouth when she heard a noise and froze. Someone was coming down the stairs and into the kitchen. Whoever it was they were bound to spot her as the lamp next to her was alight. Part of her was praying it was Bill, he wouldn't care overly much that she was here. In fact he would likely moan at her about not coming to get him first! Especially considering he was waiting for her... Or if it wasn't Bill then at least Sir John or Lord Jasper. They at least seemed to like her and wouldn't be overly bothered about her eating cake in the middle of the night.

Heck, even Gerald would be fine. She would be able to make him keep quiet no problem! However the steps were way too light for them to belong to a man. These steps were definitely female and, if Sally was hearing correctly, were trying to be as quiet as possible. Whoever it was was sneaking down here as well and were trying not to be caught.

Sally kept her eyes glued to the door, still with the fork in her mouth. As the door opened, she nearly choked on her mouthful of chocolate cake as she saw just who else it was that had snuck down to the kitchen in the middle of the night.

A moment of silence passed as the two women stared at each other before Sally finally managed to swallow what was in her mouth and removed the fork. "Lady Jacqueline! What are you doing here?"

The taller woman smirked as she crossed her arms elegantly over her chest and spoke. "I should be asking you the same question."

"I'm eating cake, what does it look like?" Sally replied, indicating the plate in front of her like it was the most obvious thing in the world. An uncomfortable silence descended as they stared coolly at each other. Sally sat defiantly, twiddling the fork absently in her fingers as she waited for the other woman to say something. Lady Jacqueline however remained silent as she stood in the doorway to the kitchen, much to Sally's annoyance. She didn't exactly want to continue eating with her stood there like that.

It didn't take long though before Lady Jacqueline's shoulders slumped slightly as she sighed, and all but flopped herself onto a stool near Sally. She turned so she was facing the smaller woman, whilst still leaning back against the counter. "It seems the both of us had the same idea." She said quietly.

Sally's mouth almost fell open at the almost friendly look on her face. It was no secret that the two woman practically despised each other. Sally was Bill's girlfriend and he loved her completely. He even had plans to marry her, and Lady Jacqueline hated her for that. She wanted the status and money that marrying Bill would grant. So it was no surprise that the two of them had clashed ever since Sally had arrived at the manor.

But now, here they both were sat in the kitchen, at gone midnight, and Lady Jacqueline was actually being polite if not pleasant! Sally had to secretly pinch herself to check that she wasn't dreaming the whole thing. Nope, she was definitely awake. Not sure what to do exactly, she offered the other woman a small smile as she pushed a second fork towards her. "This was the last slice." She said in way of explanation before she then pushed the plate so it rested in between them.

A look of surprise immediately appeared on Lady Jacqueline's face as she looked from the fork, to the cake and back up to Sally. She shook her head softly as she spoke. "No, I couldn't."

Sally widened her smile, as she nodded once. "Go on, it's ok. I seriously doubt I'll be able to finish this on my own anyway." She giggled before leaning over towards the other woman. "And besides... at least this way there'll be no evidence left of our midnight snack."

Lady Jacqueline quickly placed a hand to her mouth as she giggled slightly. Sally did have a point there. Providing they washed their utensils immediately after they finished and replaced them in the cupboards, no-one would be any the wiser. It would be a secret between the two of them. And Lady Jacqueline was surprised to find herself actually wanting to. "If you're sure." She said, it almost sounding like a question.

Sally nodded as she pushed the second fork towards Lady Jacqueline again. "Go on."

Lady Jacqueline gave her a small smile before her long fingers picked up the fork and she nodded in gratitude. "Thank you."

Sally merely smiled in reply before popping another forkful of cake into her mouth. Lady Jacqueline quickly did the same, and the two woman giggled just as two friends would.

They didn't talk as they ate the slice of cake. Neither knew exactly what to say, and they didn't want to ruin the, for once, comfortable atmosphere between them. So instead they silently sat next to each other, eating cake until there was only a small bit of it left. It was then that Sally stood and pushed her stool in with one foot. She turned to Lady Jacqueline and gave her a smile. "You can have the rest. I think I've had my fill of chocolatey goodness for now."

Lady Jacqueline giggled as she nodded, placing another forkful of cake into her mouth. Sally quickly washed, dried and put away the fork she had used before walking towards the door. She paused with her hand on the handle though and turned back to the other woman. "Goodnight." She smiled.

"Goodnight." Lady Jacqueline replied, returning the smile. Sally nodded before turning and walking up the stairs towards the bedrooms. She wasn't going to return to her own room yet. Oh no, she had somewhere else she needed to be. And as Sally was practically dragged into Bill's bedroom by needy hands, Lady Jacqueline mused to herself that maybe that girl wasn't quite as bad as she had once thought.
