"Good morning, Ryutaro," a familiar, annoying voice rang.
Ryutaro nibbled on a piece of his omelet rice, knowing that his little brother was coming down the stairs. "Morning Shinta- wait..." he stopped, realizing what Shintaro had called him. Ryutaro turned to Shintaro. "What did you just say?"
Shintaro sat down on the chair, reaching for his fork. "Good morning," he stated, stabbing his utensil at Ryutaro's omelet and taking some for himself.
"Hey," Ryutaro growled. "You have a plate for yourself. Why are you taking some of mine?"
"I don't know... yours always seem tastier?" Shintaro answered with some uncertainty. After a pause, he nodded before digging into his meal.
Ryutaro sighed. There was no use getting all riled up in the morning over a small matter, even if they did bicker over those types of things anyway. "Whatever," he muttered before continuing to eat.
After they finished eating, they headed for dance rehearsal. Ryutaro had to practice dancing for their new HSJ single while Shintaro would have to backdance as usual.
"Ryutaro, when will you be done with rehearsal with JUMP?" Shintaro asked, rubbing his hands together.
That's when Ryutaro remembered about earlier. Shintaro was calling him by his first name. Not that it wasn't usual for siblings to do that but... somehow he felt a bit... sad?
"Ryutaro? Ryutaro?" Shintaro waved a hand in front of him and finally, Ryutaro snapped out of it.
"Oh... umm... around 4 or so," Ryutaro replied, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"I end around 4:30 so... umm... will you wait for me?" Shintaro asked in a soft voice.
Ryutaro blinked and looked at his little brother, who had his head down for whatever reason. It was definitely a weird question especially since it was coming from Shintaro. "I always wait for you, don't I?" He could've sworn he saw Shintaro's cheeks turn slightly pink but that probably was from the cold weather.
For some reason, the atmosphere was awkward. It was as if something had changed and there was this invisible barrier between them.
When they arrived at the agency, Shintaro quickly said, "Bye Ryutaro" and left for the Johnny's Junior dressing room. Again with the "Ryutaro."
Ryutaro walked into the HSJ dance rehearsal room, rubbing the back of his head. This was bothering him more than it should have.
"What's wrong?"
Ryutaro shifted his eyes down to see Daiki with his head cocked to the side. "Oh... nothing really... it's just... Shintaro."
Daiki raised his eyebrows. "Shintaro? What about him? Did he get you in trouble again? Though... you don't seem to be mad... more like... out of it," he observed.
The younger boy shrugged. "It's probably just me. I'm thinking too much," he said, smiling. "Let's get on with practice, shall we?"
The hours went by slow and finally, they were all able to take a break. Everyone plopped down on the ground, either fanning themselves or drinking water. Ryutaro was drinking water and sighed. He felt so tired and yet they weren't quite done.
Ryutaro heard a knock and assumed it was probably their choreographer. To his surprise, it was his little brother. "Looking for Ryutaro?" Yabu asked while Shintaro nodded. He got up and walked to the door, where Shintaro was.
"Yeah? What's up?" he asked, wondering what Shintaro wanted.
"Umm... practice ended early." Shintaro seemed a bit fidgety, too.
"That's great! You can go home early," Ryutaro said. Then he noticed Shintaro's expression change.
"I want to wait for... Ryutaro..." Shintaro murmured, twiddling with his fingers.
Ryutaro stood there, surprised. "I guess that's fine? Right?" he asked, directing his question to the rest of HSJ.
They all nodded and all resumed their positions while Shintaro sat down in the corner, where the smaller boy could view all of them.
"Since when did Shintaro start calling you Ryutaro?" Daiki asked, who was next to him. Apparently, Ryutaro wasn't the only one who noticed.
"I don't know. Since this morning? It's just... really weird..." Ryutaro murmured, obviously not paying attention to the choreographer's comments.
"Why?" Daiki pried on with the subject.
"I guess... I'm used to nii-chan," he admitted, wondering if there was anything else to it.
Ryutaro saw a grin spreading on Daiki's face. "So you already miss him calling you nii-chan."
The younger boy wrinkled his nose. "I wouldn't put it that way..." He seriously didn't like that creepy look from Daiki.
"Then what is it?" Daiki questioned, tilting his head slightly.
"...I'm just not used to it. That's all. He's growing older and yeah..." Ryutaro managed to spurt out even though he was having a hard time convincing even himself.
Daiki looked as if he didn't believe him either. "Is that all there really is to it?"
"What are you trying to hint at?" Ryutaro shot back, feeling like he should know something but he didn't.
Daiki ruffled his hair affectionately. "Hmm... why don't you ask Shintaro?"
Ryutaro turned his attention to his little brother who was pouting in his direction with furrowed brows. "What's with that ugly face?" he mouthed to him.
Shintaro stuck out his tongue and crossed his arms over his chest. Ryutaro noticed that a frown formed in a matter of seconds. He would bug his little brother later on his weird mood today. The youngest HSJ member wanted to ask what Daiki meant by his questions but then the music started and rehearsal continued.
Ryutaro tried not to get distracted with Shintaro watching him. The smaller boy had his palms under his chin, elbows propped on his bent knees. This was the first time his little brother came to watch him practice so Ryutaro felt a bit uncomfortable.
Finally, dance rehearsal ended and they could all go home. As each member left, they said their good-bye's and petted Shintaro.
Daiki was the second to last one to leave but instead of being affectionate with Shintaro like the other members, he poked Ryutaro's cheek. "See ya," he said, smiling with a glint in his eyes.
Ryutaro nodded before walking with a not-so-happy Shintaro home. "Hey... what happened?" He didn't understand why Shintaro ended up all unhappy and didn't want to get in trouble with his mom for the millionth time.
"Hmph..." was all that Shintaro replied with.
Ryutaro shrugged, deciding it was best to leave his little brother alone.
"Do you like Arioka-kun?" Shintaro suddenly asked out of nowhere.
"Dai-chan?!" Ryutaro exclaimed, clearly shocked. "What... where did you get that idea??"
"So... you don't?" Shintaro inquired softly, kicking some imaginary dirt.
"Of course not! He's an older brother to me like the rest of BEST," Ryutaro answered honestly. The thought of dating Daiki weirded him out.
Shintaro sighed and smiled shyly with cheeks tinted pink. "That's a relief..." he commented in an almost inaudible voice but Ryutaro managed to catch it.
"Wait... don't tell me you like Dai-chan..." Ryutaro concluded, scratching his head. Was this why Shintaro was asking unusual lately? But that still didn't explain the 'Ryutaro' thing...
"I don't!" Shintaro protested, grabbing a hold of Ryutaro's sleeve. He began to tug on it so much that Ryutaro thought his jacket was going to stretch. "How can I... when I like... l-like..."
Ryutaro was surprised when Shintaro hugged him tightly, arms around his waist. His voice was muffled but he heard, "...you... Ryutaro..."
That's when he realized the hidden meaning behind Daiki's words. Ryutaro smiled and pulled back, cupping Shintaro's cheeks. "I like you, too, Shintaro."
"Really?" Shintaro's eyes were glittering with happiness.
"Though I have one question," Ryutaro stated. "Why are you calling me Ryutaro?"
Shintaro bit his bottom lip. "Because I don't see you as nii-chan... so..."
So that was it... "You're really cute, you know that?" Ryutaro asked, causing Shintaro blush even harder. "But it'll be cuter if you call me nii-chan, like you always do."
Shintaro nodded furiously while Ryutaro tilted the younger boy's chin up, leaning closer. His little brother closed his eyes and Ryutaro couldn't help but him. It wasn't his character to be this nice to someone especially his little brother/new boyfriend. Instead of kissing him, he pinched Shintaro's cheeks hard.
"That hurts!" Shintaro whined, rubbing his own cheeks.
Ryutaro laughed and took a hold of Shintaro's hands into his own. He placed a chaste kiss on both of Shintaro's cheeks. "Better?"
Shintaro pouted and shook his head.
"You're acting like such a girl, Shintaro," Ryutaro sighed, shaking his head.
"I'm not a girl!" Shintaro protested.
Ryutaro flicked Shintaro's forehead with his finger. "Well, I think it's your fault for falling for me."
"You... you're so mean, Ryu-" Ryutaro quickly placed a soft kiss on Shintaro's lips, effectively cutting him off.
"What did I say about calling me Ryutaro?" Ryutaro whispered with a frown when he pulled back.
"That's not fair..." Shintaro murmured. "Nii-chan..."
Ryutaro smiled. "Much better," he muttered before kissing him once again.
