"Agh, what are you doing?" Iruka wailed, yanking the knife out of Naruto’s hands. “You can’t open a bag of flour like that. You’ll just make a mess.”

"What? How else do you open it?" Naruto pouted.

"Like this." Iruka demonstrated, cracking the glued flap and opening the bag of flour.

"What?! Iruka-sensei, how’d you do that."

"It wasn’t that amazing." Iruka rolled his eyes. "Now come on. The oven’s almost preheated and we want to have the dough ready."

"Are you sure this is going to work, Iruka-sensei?"

"Yes. You’ve had my ginger bread cookies before."

"Yeah, they were all crispy and burnt." Naruto grinned.

"Aside from the time you came over and I forgot to set the timer."

"Yeah. I know. It's just you don't have all the ingredients for the cookies I make."

"Not all cookies have chocolate chips in them." Iruka laughed.

"Well, then, they should." Naruto pouted.

Iruka smiled. "Come here and measure the flour. I'll beat the eggs in a separate bowl."

"I wanna do the eggs."

"You sure you won't get shells in them again?"

"Yeah. I've been practicing."

"Alright then" Iruka said, ruffling Naruto's hair as he swapped places.

"I wish you wouldn't do that?"

"Do what?" Iruka feigned ignorance.

"Iruka-sensei! I'm almost seventeen! I'm not a kid anymore."

Iruka stared at him. "You'll never be too old to have your hair ruffled."

"Well, I should be." Naruto grumbled, cracking a second egg into the bowl. A tiny shard of shell fell in, but it was easily plucked out.

Iruka measured out the dry ingredients, stirring them together in his bowl. He was nearly finished when he felt Naruto start to charge his chakra. Iruka spun around, kunai ready and chakra humming beneath his skin.

Naruto yelped. "Don't do that. You made me get egg on my face."

"Why are you charging your chakra?"

"It spins the ingredients together really fast... Am I not supposed to stir it that way?" Naruto mumbled, looking at his feet.

"No, it's fine. I've just never heard of anyone doing it that way."

Naruto grinned at him, bouncing back as usual. "Can I lick the bowl?"

"It has raw eggs in it." Iruka chuckled.

"So?"

Iruka shook his head. "I guess it couldn't hurt."

Naruto jumped up, letting out a whoop.

"Only after all the cookies are in the oven." Iruka ordered.

"Okay! Come on Iruka-sensei! We need to get these done!"

Iruka laughed, ruffling Naruto's hair when the boy tried to duck away.

About half an hour later, Iruka sighed into his couch, dishes drying on the rack, save for the bowl, which Naruto hugged to his chest as he flopped into the space next to Iruka.

"Let's watch a movie." Naruto mumbled around the spoon.

"Did you have anything in mind?" Iruka asked, picking at the gunk under his nails. He'd washed his hands, but under his nails hadn't gotten completely clean.

Naruto shrugged. "What about that one where the guy sees what it'd be like if he'd never been born?"

"December's barely started."

"So?"

Iruka sighed. "Alright, you put it in."

"Yes!" Naruto jumped up, leaving the bowl behind.

Iruka snatched finger along the rim, settling back in his spot as Naruto looked through the movies.

"Where is it?"

"It's alphabetical."

"I can't find it."

"Are you looking under 'I' or 'W'?"

"Oh, woops." Naruto shifted over a shelf. "You have too many movies."

"Can never have too many movies."

"You need a hobby." Naruto pulled the movie off the shelf and set it in the player, plopping back onto the couch.

"That is my hobby."

"You need a new one."

"Quit grouching and watch the movie."

"I'm not grouching!"

"Yes you are. Now, shush."

They watched together until about half way through when Iruka fell asleep. Then, near the end, Iruka woke up again to find Naruto asleep. He shook his head fondly.

Getting up with a stiff stretch, Iruka shut off the movie and put a blanket over Naruto. The boy shifted, but didn't wake up. He smiled, gently ruffling Naruto's hair again. "Silly, should go home if you're tired," He mumbled to himself, leaving the polished bowl in the kitchen on his way down the hall to get ready for bed.
