ENH! Common mistake. The actual phrase "separation of church and state" is not in the actual constitution. This is true. The actual quote is "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." In other words, if it has to do with religion, the government should not and cannot touch it. Period. (This is further upheld by many a Supreme Court decision.) When the phrase "the seperation of church and state" is used, that's just shorthand.

See that is and I'm definitely not going to deny it. It's extremely important to know when people run around shouting we're a 'CHRISTIAN COUNTRY OMFG' when in fact we can't claim to be any such thing. But most people actually assume the words "separation of church and state" are there, and telling people they're wrong leads to hilarious results.
