my roommate has a chinchilla and he is awesomesauce. she adopted him when he was 9 and he's 14 now. apparently he's less fussy than a lot of other chinchillas, but he loveslovesloves people and is so fun to play with and very expressive.
anyway, my point was going to be that if you really did want something that has a longer lifespan, you could think about adopting an older animal. plus it's usually harder for older animals to find homes.
I had a rat a while back and I loved having her so much and have thought about getting rats again, but I get really attached to my animals and so I'm currently staying away from the ones that only live a few years. but I figure my cat has a good 15 years left in her, so I'm set for a while ;)
I know! I've met chinchillas before and they're lovely, they're just a lot of work. And I have no room for a cage like they would require.
I have thought about adopting an older animal, but the problem is what. Dogs are out of the question (there's a reason we're just puppysitters and not dog-owners in my house), no one in my house likes cats (sorry. It's not that I dislike them, but the fur drives me crazy, plus I want an animal that always seems to like me). I don't like non-mammals, and so that pretty much narrows the field down to rodents
( ... )
hmmm, yes it does seem like gerbils are the perfect fit for you right now, if only they lived a little longer :\ one of my friends has guinea pigs and loves them, but they do need some space to run around.
I don't think I could ever foster an animal. I would get too attached and then when they came to take it away I would wail. and agreed on the gerbils babies; any kind of newborn animal babies are so fragile and dying babies is not something you need to deal with.
hopefully there will be some nice little gerbils who find you soon!
They really are lovely pets! When I live on my own and am older, I could totally see owning one. But I live with my parents in a small house (and chinchillas and their cages take up a LOT of space), and I'm in my early twenties so it's not like my living situation for the next five to ten years is predictable. But I was google image searching them and I was like omg, I love these things, omg, I want one.
They are SO SOFT AND ADORABLE. I used to have a video of Felix just running around during one of our drink fests...AND WHEN THEY PLAY IN THEIR SAND, SWEET JESUS, IT'S LIKE SEEING GOD'S FACE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND HAVING IT BE REALLY SMALL, FURRY AND ADORABLE.
Plus I'd, like, enjoy dating someone at some point in the next 15-20 years, and it's easier and more socially acceptable to be like "I have a co-dependent relationship with my dog" rather than "I have a co-dependent relationship with a chinchilla".
This just encapsulates so many things about you right there.

My friend Harold had a pet chinchilla named Felix. He's always been my favourite.
