calm down, define kaput? Is it just not reading the device? have you tried using it with another computer? How old is the partition? It's possible that the USB port in your computer itself has burnt out, so try using another port/computer. Tell me what trouble shooting steps you've already taken with it and I'll give you some suggestions.

*shrug* I'm pretty sure it's not the USB cord cuz it's.. yea. Only 2 partitions have done this. I dunno I'm just not gonna touch it anymore lol until we take it to this one computer place where we get all our work done.

tch, I dislike computer repair shops, they're out to make money, so even if it can be fixed easily they'll just say it's junk and get you to buy a new one. Anyways, you say 2 partitions did this? Both external hard drives? Are they plugged into a USB port in your computer nearby? I didn't say there was anything wrong with the cable, but if both HDs aren't 3-4x years old and both failed around the same time it sounds like a problem with your computer and not your hard drives. Just trying to help~

That really sucks. =/ I hope you can get some of it back somehow.

I remember when my first computer died, I lost over 50 unfinished stories. It was one of my most heartbreaking experiences. =( I don't think I really wrote at the same rate after that.

What about your computer died? Most of the time, especially with AMDs, the processor will burn out and the hard drive will be perfectly fine. In the future, if your computer dies, just transplant your hard drive into another computer. If it's a newer hard drive, ie: a SATA drive, you can even buy an external hard drive enclosure and use it like an external HD.

Umm...I'm not too sure. This was like, 5 years ago. And I don't think we have that computer lying around anymore, even if we could do something to retrieve my stuff.

I figured as much, but I just thought I'd throw it out there incase anything like that ever happened again. Forewarned is forearmed or something like that.
