An interesting tactic...

First off, I read an article stating that a University in the US is making fitness classes mandatory for overweight students or else they may not get their diploma.

An interesting tactic.

For more information, read hereI, for one, think this is a positive move, but I feel like this should be executed at a high school level, and not necessarily at ( Read more... )

I agree that this is a very good idea that at least someone with authority in the States is realizing this is an issue. My boyfriend's family has made several trips to the US to theme parks and such, and according to him there are often separate lines for very large people moving around the park on available scooters, which enables them to skip the regular lines and go straight to the front ( ... )

I totally agree with your remarks on the exceptions made for larger people. It's ridiculous. A person is a person and unless they have like... mental or severe physical disabilities, I don't think they should get any different treatments.

You know, some girl who is a friend of one of my friends on facebook asked me how I thought obesity was unhealthy.

I was like, are you serious??

And she said all this bullcrap about like, how there are complex causes for obesity and how the negative view of it causes more problems than the issue itself and I was like "....I don't care what caused it, it's still unhealthy. Facts do not change."

Ugh it was the stupidest debate I've ever had. Seriously.

I guess I can see how a negative perspective could make matters worse (rebelling against 'the man' so to speak, very a la punk rock) and perhaps encouraging those who do have a few extra pounds to keep them or put on even more. But if this issue is faced early enough I think that can be avoided as well.

It's interesting that you pointed out 'severe physical disabilities' because I think that's how a lot of people are seeing it, which is not right. It's hard to address this in a way that's not 'mean', but that's what's necessary for change here. If you're not blunt about these things, really large people will look to the 'really, really large' people and still think they're ok in comparison.

...sigh. This is another one of those issues I feel could be solved if I was able to physically pick people up and place them on a separate isolated island. lol.
