Someone PLEASE explain...

These creative commons licenses.  I've looked at their website and their FAQs, but for some reason I still don't understand what they are for or when to use them.  Can someone translate to chipmunk for me?

From what I understand, Creative Commons is a form of copyright that isn't exactly as stringent as getting something officially copyrighted through the government.

Basically, let's say I put up a story through Creative Commons. You can read it, copy it, and print it, but you must tell people that it came from me. I still maintain all rights to the work and can at any time decide to pull it if I want but I'm willing to let other people use it until that time.

That's what I *think* Creative Commons is.

Creative Commons mantra tends to be: You can read it and distribute it at will, but not change it or sell it. Most personal podcasts are released under Creative Commons. EscapePod, for example, buys and functions under Creative Commons licensing. Probably the biggest most active proponent of Creative commons is Cory Doctorow. Boing Boing is all CC and most anything he publishes/is involved with as well. He does a lot of pannels and promoting of CC, which he tends to tout as the inevitable future fall out of the internet.
