I listened to an interview with whassisname who brought the book to film. He said, essentially, that he decided to make the movie that he wanted the book to be - that when he went back to re-read the book he found that he remembered things that weren't actually in there. That the girls were written by Lewis at a time in his life when he didn't know anything about women (that is, before he met his eventual wife) and thus were flat and useless characters, that people today wouldn't relate or like the girls as they were written, and that a 16-year old cute independent girl is totally going to fall for the 16-18-year old cute independent guy with father (or uncle) issues because that's the way the world works. And that it would be weird if she *didn't* fall for him. And that's why he wrote a budding romance between the two of them. The story is linked here.
I'm not saying it's right, just answering your question.
I guess that it boils-down to me being deeply offended that, because I'm a woman, these studios think that tossing in a bullsh*t romance is how to get my attention rather than a well-written story and script.
