Silly little rant I posted on RGP today.I like the fact that these automatic card shufflers are becoming more common in B&M casinos. They result in more hands/hour, which is good for the players, the house, and the dealer ( Read more... )

I'm generally not a fan of any technical advance that outright deprives people of their jobs, unless the jobs created by the advance exceeds the jobs lost to it.

The autoshufflers will make poker more profitable for casinos and card rooms, therefore more poker, therefore--more jobs.

By the way, it isn't just hands/hour, it's also the fact that cheating is made much more difficult [unless the machines themselves are rigged], the deck is counted every hand, and the shuffle is of much better quality [as three shuffles and a strip is just not enough].

I wonder if a machine that shuffled cards could straighten out a mess of cards without "denting" them along the edges...

There is a machine in my office in which you insert paper flat into one tray, and envelopes into another tray. You then hit a switch and the machine repeatedly inputs a sheet of paper, folds it, and spits out the perfectly folded letter inside the envelope. So yeah, you would think they could make better auto-shufflers.

I just checked and the one we have is called, "Folder FD-612" made by Formax. There are lots of different models out there, but most of them are pretty expensive. I feel for you--manually folding and stuffing envelopes is no fun at all.
