well, as crappy as it is, there is research to support the possibility.
but still, that refers to women in general, not a particular woman.

20 years ago, my mom was the only girl in her high school physics class. Nowadays, it's about 50/50 in the sciences in high school. So something changed between the late seventies and today in regard to society's acceptance of women in science, and it may still take some time for that effect to ripple up to academia.
