I'm heading for no, he didn't do it, but I think it might be a kneejerk reaction on my part. I didn't even think, I just said, "No," and I think that's because I don't want to believe he'd do it, either. But now I'm not sure.

Daddy was definitely pissed off at Dean, though. I think the thingie purposely didn't come around while Dean was there. He was too aware, too aggressive. And I think if John had used them as bait, he'd have done a better job of killing it right then.

So...I guess I'm going with no, too.

Okay, I'm laying my money down.

I think the Shtriga was meant to be Dean's first solo kill. Daddy left saying he may be gone for a few days and that they weren't to leave the room at all. Dean leaves the room and the Strega gets Sam, but! Daddy bursts in just in time and comes to the rescue.

I'm thinking that when Daddy went out, he stayed close by so he could help if necessary, but not so close that he could see Dean's every move. (The man's gotta piss sometimes, jeez.)

It essentially served to put the fear of failure into Dean. Plus, the look of disappointment on Daddy's face when he said that Dean wasn't supposed to let Sam out of his sight? Ouch.

Of the two distinct possibilities*, either would work in the long run.
#1: What could have happened: Dean kills the enemy, saves Sam, gets Daddy's approval and then continues to work to keep it ( ... )

And what about Dean? Dean was a little kid, he's supposed to be protected too. How was this in any way a necessary thing to teach a 9 year old? It's essentially saying "Dean, your only worth something so long as you do your "job" and protect your brother", whether that is consciously what John meant or not. That's not just cruel, that's twisted.

I don't think John would have made Dean and Sam bait without telling Dean. Also, if John had used them as bait, he would have been keeping watch and he would have seen Dean leave the motel room.

If John had been using his sons as bait, he messed up, not Dean, and he's a real bastard for yelling at Dean at the end. As it stands, he still shouldn't have yelled at Dean but I can chalk it up to fear of almost losing his youngest son.

Dean's about 10 in the flashback, right?

I think it's been established somewhere that the current episodes are in spring-ish 2006 (I could be wrong, but someone constructed a timeline at some point), which would put Dean at 27 years old. He says the shtriga incident was 17 years ago in the episode, which would make him 10, or 9 if it was early January.

I think I need to rewatch the episode and specifically John's entrace in the flashback before I decide for certain.
