Sam. I think he got it while he was at college (through possibly less-than-legal credit means) and now he shares it with Dean. Dean doesn't exactly strike me as the laptop type, because he seems to have no problem doing research at a public library, and a laptop takes up precious Impala-space that could be used to hold weapons or other shiny and necessary things.
Yay! Finally! I've been wanting to talk about the laptop because it really confuses me. See, I just kind of assumed that the laptop was Sam's. After all, university student with a computer, makes sense. Also, Sam's usually the one using the computer. Except that the decorations on the laptop and the leather satchal it's carried in look more Dean's style than Sam's.
Also, the laptop wasn't in the Pilot, which means if Sam had a laptop, it was probably in the apartment when it burned down. Or, and this is my personal theory, Sam brought it with him to Jericho to do some work and left it in the car, which is why Dean came back.
If anyone has any other theories (besides, it's a tv show, don't read too much into it.), I'd love to hear them. Like the Impala or John's journal, the laptop is an important prop and having an idea where it came from and who actually owes it would be very helpful.
It's totally Sam's. I think Dean probably put the stickers on it and maybe Sam swiped a bag of Dean's to hold it in, but look at the way Sam touches it. I dunno, it's hard to explain, but I have a laptop that is used by other people. The way Dean uses it is the way my roommates use mine. He's comfortable with it, he's not afraid to touch it or use it. But it's not his.
Good point, but what if?lavenderfrostApril 20 2006, 19:57:02 UTC
But what if Sam used some somewhat shady tactics to get the laptop in college? He knew he'd need it, b/c it's getting to where you can't survive anywhere without a laptop or pc, so maybe he used a fake credit card that he only kept around for when there was no getting around using it?
He may not like it, but we've seen a couple of indications in previous eps that Sam has few qualms about bending the law or certain moral guidelines when he feels it's necessary. Stealing a car to go see what the hell was wrong with Dean in Scarecrow, leaving Kathleen to deal with Daddy Bender when he knew it was more than likely she'd shoot him, despite his qualms about killing actual people in previous eps.
*shrugs* If he's that expedient with someone's car or their life when he feels it necessary (I'm not arguing the morality of the decisions - I feel he did the right thing. He still seemed to go against his own personal code, is all I'm saying.), I can see him using a fake credit card or hustling pool to get the laptop and some other stuff
( ... )
Kripke/Meta = OTPlavenderfrostApril 20 2006, 20:19:30 UTC
The Powers That Be might be intentionally leaving it vague with many possible answers. It stimulates this meta-y stuff, and Kripke loves reading what people have to say about the show. It makes sense that he would add in little bits to see if he can stir up more discussion.
Besides - given the MASSIVE shout-outs he's given to the fandom in lots of eps, you know he's GOT to be haunting LJ at least once in a while. ^_~
I think it's Sam's. In Scarecrow, the leather satchel they carry it in is one of the things Sam takes with him when he leaves and Dean has to go to the jr. college to do his reasearch. But I also think the producers are trying to avoid saying for sure so they can have more flexibility with it.

Yeah, that's pretty good evidence to say the laptop belongs to Sam. I'm back in the "The computer is Sam's" camp.

We've seen multiple examples of fans analyzing and reading more into things than Kripke himself, after all. lol It's really like that with any fandom.
