Today (now technically yesterday) is the day after Valentine's Day. It's one of my favorite holidays, along with the day after Halloween and the day after Easter weekend. I celebrated it as I usually do by going to the store and buying bags of half-priced chocolate. It was a good day, but now I feel really sick and I think I might have accidentally ( Read more... )

Maybe it's just me, but I see no cartoon-like expressions. :( Unless you're referring to your icon.

I got a bag of red and pink Smarties and a bag of Reese peanut butter filled hearts. I do not recommend the second one!

No luck so far. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe M.I.T. and Sociology weren't as useful as I thought they would be

Hey! I'm majoring in the same subjects!(Well, Mass Comm is similar to M.I.T., I think.)

I will come to your first concert as a rock star if you decide to go down that road.

Really? Sociology, too??

MIT probably is the same as Mass Comm (I really think they should have just called it that or "Media studies"). Is your program filled with technical, how-to kinda stuff or is it more like theoretical McLuhan/Chomsky stuff?

And out of curiosity, what were you planning to do career-wise with your degree? (I need some ideas!)

Yup! I love sociology. And yes, I think my program should have been called "Media Studies" too. People always look at me blankly when I tell them I'm majoring in Mass Comm. ("What? Math Communications?")

My program is really theoretical. I did take some practical fourth-year level courses, but they were related to the CRTC and working with an non-profit on their communications plan and not "make a website"/"write a newspaper article" type of thing (which was kind of what I expected from my program!) But I enjoyed it anyway.

I'm not totally sure what I want to do yet. I was thinking communications jobs and media jobs where I could do writing and editing. (I know that doesn't narrow it down very much!) Sometimes I look at http://www.mediajobsearchcanada.com/ but haven't applied to anything there seriously.

By the way, did you know that if you double-click on a word in any article on the New York Times online, a window with the definition pops up?

Holy SHIT, that blows my mind. It's ingenious. NYT, no wonder you're ahead of the game in the newspaper business.

I know!!! I randomly double-clicked something while I was there and a small window came up. At first I thought, "Really, NYT? Pop-up adds are so 1999." But then I saw the definition and I was very, very impressed.
