i just found this essay i did last year entitled "Dickenson: Brilliant Poet or Sex Crazed Lunatic"
Emily Dickinson, the famous poet, one of the most well known literary artists to date. How could a poet like this be anything but pure and kosher? How could we not introduce her work to our children in school? She is a sex driven maniac, thats why. The fact that this pervert has found her own little way of infiltrating our schools and corrupting our poor and innocent children's minds. What is even more discomforting is the fact that she did this all while beyond the grave.
According to the textbook, Emily Dickinson spent most of her life in her parents home ignoring everyone whoever came to visit. After her husband had died, whom i believe killed himself after finding out how sex driven his wife was, her anti-social traits got even worse (423). She sat in her room all day writing poetry, EXOTIC POETRY! Take this example from If you were coming in the Fall, “But, now, uncertain of the length / Of this that is between, / It goads me, like the Goblin Bee- / That will not state-its sting” (Dickinson 17-20). This passage is obviously about sexual intercourse and how when “it” is “between” (we can assume her legs) it “goads” her like a “sting” from the “Goblin Bee” which we can only assume to be an orgasm. A few lines before this in the same poem Dickinson writes, “I'd count them on my Hand, / Subtracting, till my fingers dropped / Into Van Dieman's Land” (10-13). If this isn't representing masturbation then slap me across the face and call me Sally. “Van Dieman's Land” is a former name for Tasmania which is well known for where England sent their convicts. Dickinson must have thought that her sexual feelings were so wrong and disgusting that they belonged with the vile convicts.
Some may say that her intent wasn't what I am perceiving, but there is no way there can be this many examples if she wasn't trying to do it, even if it is sub conscience. If it is her subconscience that is making these feelings come up doesn't make them disappear. Is a man who subconsciously thinks of women as the house keeper not sexiest?
The fact that this pornography is allowed into public schools makes me want to vomit one hundred times over. She needs the be taken out of the curriculum before we ruin a whole new generation of young learners and teach them something that is actually important and not corrupting.
