Why would anyone want to cut off their toes to fit in a pair of shoes so they could go riding off with a prince? I guess if he was good-looking or nice, I might understand, but it seems a bit rash.

It serves them right. I'm really glad Cinderella got to go with the prince in the end.

I believe the point was that they were greedy and prideful enough to physically injure themselves in the vain hopes that the prince would not notice and they would no longer need to do physical labor for the rest of their lives--though it did not seem that they were doing much of it to begin with.

... Not that the prince noticed. They can be so impractical, sometimes, unfortunately.
