oh my god, Widget looks just like Tanya and my black cat, Cinder! Black male cats are such lovers! I'm so relieved to hear that everything was alright with Widget.

This is a very outdated picture of Cinder from last year, when he was a little kitty...now he's huge!

My 2 cents, as a professional: Your local vet is absolutely right in that most of these guys do fine with diet change, but if they block once they are prone to block again. His urine needs to be monitored fairly regularly to make sure he isn't producing any more crystals, and especially a few weeks after ANY diet change. Some of these guys need to stay on prescription diets for life. Sometimes the expensive surgery, called a perineal urethrostomy (look it up if you want to freak out the men in the room), needs to be performed even with the first blockage if the cat cannot be catheterized due to a damaged or devitalized weiner. The emergency vet was sort of right in that repeat offenders often need the surgery, as it is actually more cost effective and less life threatening than repeat blockages. In general, I hold a three-strikes-you're-out rule with it; if a cat blocks for the third time, while on an appropriate diet, we need to widen the urinary out port so small crystals and sludge don't block it up. On average I see about ( ... )
