Rant of the Century, Part 1

Mar 30, 2007 22:14

I have the need to rant about Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. Because Clamp is starting to piss me off.

And when I rant, I can go on and on and on. I want to apologize in advance.

Warning: Spoilers ahead. Not too much, because I don’t want to ruin everything, but there are enough.

Story:
I had really high hopes for Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles when it first came out, so I guess that’s why I got tired of it rather quickly. It’s not that it has a boring plot or anything, but it’s annoyingly tedious and difficult to follow. The concept of other worlds and the people in it, who may seem the same but who are actually completely different, makes my head spin. Not to mention there’s that complicated mess Fei Wang Reed left in his quest for power, which infuriates me to no end. That man spilled so much blood and caused so many tears for his own selfish gain… All because of his stupid plan.

I can never forgive him.

However, even if I dislike the story of Tsubasa, I am absolutely in love with the characters in it.

Mokona:
Mokona is Mokona, and therefore should be liked by all. It’s so cute and --even when it’s stealing Kurogane’s food-- I still feel the desire to cuddle it like the oversized meat bun it is.

Fai:
Fai… At first, I didn’t know what to think of him. It was almost painful to see him smile when subtly mentioning the burden of his dark secrets and troubled past. Yet, despite all that, he is still so kind. I don’t think it does much good to run away from your problems, but Fai made a decision and --sometimes-- doing something is better than doing nothing.

Sakura:
I think that’s why, at first, Tsubasa Sakura annoyed me. All she did was sleep or unintentionally hurt Syaoran by reminding him of the past they no longer share. It made me miss the way she took responsibility for herself like in Card Captor Sakura. Even when she still needed help from others, she was strong enough to protect her loved ones when she need to. She didn’t need Syaoran by her side at every moment like an overprotective mother hen.

As more feathers were returned to her and as she began to help her companions get them back, I started liking her again. She won all my respect when she finished first in the Dragonfly Race. She may not have been able to do so without the help of the others, but at least she did it, and I was proud of her.

It didn’t last very long, though.

With the realization of the Syaoran-who-is-actually-a-clone’s true nature, I hate how she completely ignores the real Syaoran’s feelings for her. Yes, it must be painful to be betrayed by the one you love. Yes, it hurts to have a person who looks and acts just like him. But does that really justify you treating someone else so cruelly, for something that isn’t his fault?

Is it really fair to chase after a dream, when the heart you fell in love with is right under your nose?

I don’t like the new Sakura.

I don’t like the new Sakura, who has hardened her heart and acts selfishly. It’s frustrating to see her interact with the other characters now, because she’s the same and yet completely different. I don’t like how she wants to leave the group, no matter what the reason. Even if I didn’t like Sakura being so defenseless in the beginning, I like her being so independent even less.

Just because she saw a fate she wants to change, doesn’t mean she has leave her friends to do it. If she just believes that they can change it -together-- then it’s possible. She has the power to change worlds. She can change destiny too.

Syaoran:
I always liked Syaoran since CCS, so Tsubasa’s sweeter version of him was even better. The fact that he is so selfless and loves Sakura so much, to the point he can let her forget about him, proves that he is really a good boy.

He got complicated really fast with the whole who-is-real-and-who-is-the-clone situation, but he isn’t any different than the way the others know him. He’s warm, caring, and humble. He’s honest and hard working. He lets the new Sakura walk all over him, because he loves her. He does his best, not for his own selfish gain, but because he just wants her to smile the way she used to. He tries not to be a burden and tiptoes around his friends as if he were walking on eggshells.

It hurts to watch him, because he tries so hard, but Sakura just avoids him and his heartfelt efforts.

I think Syaoran is the only character, besides Kurogane, who is truly honest with what he feels or wants to do. He knows what’s important to him, he knows who is most important to him, and just wants to help her in any way that he can.

His character in this series is easy to like, proven by the fact that he even managed to warm the heart of Kurogane.

And that's the end of part 1. I don't know how long this is going to be or how many parts it's going to have, but I still have things I want to mention. Like Kurogane, who is my favorite character, and the couples in Tsubasa.

Please tell me what you think so far.
