I think people put a clasification on it because they want to feel special. And if its "My God" then "I" might feel a bit more connected and pious.

Also people might now have the same belief as you that there is just 1 god sitting up there. They might actually think that because of the diffrent teachings presented by each faith they are actually worshiping a diffrent god. And that because their faith is the "right" faith, their god is the "One true god"

it is certinly easier to look down on some one else if their faith, thereby their god is Inferior. And no one wants to be worshiping an Inferior gad.

I hate when people do that. I tend to put it in the "forcing your religion down my throat" category. It kind of reminds me of when people get into these 'movie' arguments. One party might like said movie, while the self-proclaimed movie know it all thought it sucked, and decides to belittle the party that did not like the movie, because they think they are Gods gift to movies, and they are the messiah of what is good and what is bad. Thankfully I do not know anyone who is that extreme with movies or religion. I have met a few, but walked away.
