or that home water consumption is only 10% of total water consumption (according to jeffrey sachs in common wealth).
i recently read a pamphlet on climate change, whose task was to figure out whether britain might someday be able to be sustainable in its energy production & use. (his answer? realistically, no, unless you import energy. which means, one hopes, power lines from the sahara.)
anyway, the author made the point that if everybody makes small changes, what well get is.... a small change. and so, once again, we return to the old saw that personal consumption choices aren't going to get us out of much. not climate change, not pesticide use, &c. it might in terms of, say, supporting a CSA and local organic farmers. or maybe encourage less packaging. but as my future jewwonk husband ezra klein points out, buying locally won't actually change much:
