Fandom: Tales of Vesperia
“Okay, so…tell me this, Lieutenant. What happened, exactly?” asked the deep male voice belonging to Yuri Lowell, vigilante extraordinaire, hero of Terca Lumereis and the book Tales of Vesperia (though he hates admitting it).
Lieutenant Sodia of the Flynn Brigade purses her lips and then her voice quivers slightly in the darkness. “I…was looking for you in the castle. To you know…apologize for what I did to you in Zaude.”
“Yes, that took place, and I accepted your apology. Then what happened?”
“I…uh…heard footsteps.”
“Footsteps,” Yuri repeated incredulously, eyebrows raised.
“It…I thought it was Commandant Flynn, so I panicked!” she exclaimed, exasperated that the man that used to be on her ‘Most Wanted Criminal’ list was pushing her like this.
Yuri reached for a wire-like string that hung from the ceiling. He tugged it and on came the lights. “And that’s when you grabbed my arm and pushed me in this…closet before hiding in here yourself.”
She sighed, her back against the wall of the small confined space, and her front precariously close to Yuri’s chest. “Yes,” she admitted embarrassingly. “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to…”
Yuri snickered as he let go of the light switch. “You didn’t want Flynn to see you with me?” he asked. “You must really hate me to the point you don’t want to be publicly seen talking to an outlaw like me, hmm?”
Sodia gritted her teeth. It was exactly this cocky, self-righteous attitude that annoyed her to no end. “Look, I don’t have the time or energy to hate you, Yuri Lowell,” she replied coldly. “I thank you for accepting my apology, and I’m sorry I pulled you in here.”
They were silent for a moment. “You…” Yuri began. “You really like Flynn, don’t you? I mean, I was already on the Empire’s Most Wanted list for a long time, but the fact that Flynn got hurt because of me must’ve really make you angry enough to stab me.”
Her expression softened under the dim ochre light, as she turned her amethyst eyes away from his dark ones. “I’m sorry,” she mumbled, this time a lot more natural and a lot less tense than when she had first came up to him. “If it satisfies you, then yes, I really like Flynn,” she then said, her cheeks reddened at admitting this girly secret of hers to Yuri Lowell, of all people. She only attained her post as Lieutenant at age 19 because of her being tough and ‘boyish’. She would never hear the end of it if the others in her brigade knew.
To Sodia’s surprise, when she timidly turned to look up at him, that he wasn’t laughing or smirking at her. Instead, he was looking at her as if he was trying to understand how she was feeling.
Funny, how she always assumed that he was a cold, heartless bastard - from the way he had killed Ragou by pushing him into the raging rivers in Dahngrest, and how he had shoved Cumore into a deep sand pit. Yet, he had saved the world (and rid the world of those two corrupted bastards, albeit the wrong way), and now she was, stuck with him in a dim, dusty and very cramped closet - telling him of her deep, dark secret and him looking at her that way.
Now that I look closely, he is pretty good-looking…wait, what?! What are you saying, Sodia?! You like Flynn!
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked him, snapping herself out of her deviating train of thoughts.
Yuri had to admit to himself, he didn’t know her for very long. After all, during the times they actually met - she was either with Flynn, chasing him under Flynn’s orders, or stabbing him in the abdomen with a knife. His first impression of her was how uptight and tense she was - like a female version of Flynn, minus the nagging (then again, he only knew she was female because of her obvious shape and that out-of-character braid on the left side of her hair - otherwise she was like a man; a soldier no less). Yet, she was now like a real woman, her surprisingly long lashes looking away from him so daintily and now that he got a closer look at her, he noticed the mole under her left eye.
Heavens, her eyes are beautiful. Wait, what?! What are you saying, Yuri?! Get a hold of yourself!
“I was trying to be empathetic, but I guess I can’t because I’m not a girl,” he said, shrugging out of reflex. “Good luck with the whole Flynn thing, though.”
Those were the words she had least expected to come out from his lips. “T…Thanks,” she said, the sudden air of awkwardness rising between them - or was it the lack of oxygen?
“Because, you know, you have a lot of competition,” Yuri said nonchalantly, trying to shake off the strange feeling. “You’re not exactly…”
“Are you saying I’m ugly?!” she screamed at him.
“No!” he exclaimed in defence. “I’m just saying you’re not like Flynn’s ideal girl.”
“How would you know how Flynn’s ideal girl is like?! You were barely there to be his friend! I was right, damn it, you are such a jerk!” Sodia yelled, before she grabbed his shirt and pushed him to the wall (as if he wasn’t already leaning against it).
Yuri grabbed hold of her wrists, or she might just strangle him to death. The girl had an iron grip, despite her size, and he had a hard time getting her hands off. “Hey, stop that!” he yelled back, pulling her hands apart before grasping her arms to try and calm her down. She was still able to raise her forearms, and grabbed him again, trying to break free. The brooms, mops and other things in the closet started cluttering, making a significant amount of noise - of which they ignored until…
The door swung open and standing in its wake was a flabbergasted Flynn.
Both Yuri and Sodia turned to see him, and the latter’s eyes were widened as she gasped in shock. They were all speechless until Flynn’s cheeks turned red. “Oh, sorry, I thought…” he mumbled, initially approaching the closet because he thought the giant rats from the sewers had somehow sneaked into the castle. “I’ll uh…leave you two alone,” he then said, before quickly running away from the scene.
When Sodia finally came to her senses, she scrambled out of the closet to find Flynn already halfway down the hall. Falling to her knees, she groaned loudly in frustration. “Damn!” she cursed. “My life is over, and it’s all thanks to you, Yuri Lowell!”
“Hey, I wasn’t the one who pushed ourselves into the closet!” Yuri retaliated, straightening out his shirt. She didn’t respond, just sitting there silently as she contemplated. “Look, you can sort this out yourself. I’m going back home.”
Sodia got back up on her feet and grabbed his wrist before he could leave. “Oh, no you don’t. You are not leaving until we sort this out. You are coming with me and telling Flynn that this is all just a big misunderstanding. Got it?!” she barked.
Yuri sighed, but smiled knowingly when he saw the fiery blaze in her beautiful eyes. “Fine, but you owe me one,” he said, before letting her pull him to chase after Flynn. Sure, his wrist felt like breaking, but he’s been in worse situations.
After all, he never expected that she would stab him, and that was why he let down his guard.
