Calling… Yabu-mama

Inoo checked the clock on his bedside table. 2:00 am.

“Jeez, what does Yabu-kun, want?” he said and grumbled into his phone. “Moshi moshi?”

“Hi Inoo-chan!” Yabu replied energetically.

“You know I was sleeping, right?” said Inoo, a bit annoyed.

“Yeah, but…”

“What?”

“Well, everybody else couldn’t answer their phone and you’re the only one who did,” Yabu replied, a bit of pleading in his voice. It washed away Inoo’s annoyance.

“Well, what is it?”

“Oh, okay. Uhm…” he hesitated. Inoo sleepily waited for his answer. Finally, he spoke again.

“Uh.. Remember earlier? I was playing Chinese checkers with Hikaru… And I won every game,” said Yabu.

“Uh-huh,” said Inoo.

Yabu paused, unsure if he should continue. “Uhm… could you please get me, Inoo-chan? Onegai!” he suddenly begged. Inoo, obviously confused, asked him, “Get…? Where? Why?”

“Hikaru locked me in the closet and forgot to let me out!”

Inoo was fully awake now and burst into laughter. “Why call just now?” he asked.

“I-I-I fell asleep,” the elder of the two said, embarrassed.

Inoo lifted the covers off himself and stood up. “Just stay cool,” he said as he put on his jacket, “I’m coming,”

It was Daiki’s birthday and the whole of JUMP were invited to sleep over. All 7 members were already asleep; it was past 1 AM. Four of the BEST members sat in a circle playing cards. Chinen, who was hugging Daiki’s waist, fell asleep as he waited for Daiki to finish. A few seconds later, Inoo came back from the kitchen with five mugs of hot chocolate. He looked like a mother in the white flowery apron he wore.

“Here you go, ah, wait,” he said as his phone vibrated in his pocket. He set the tray down next to Hikaru who picked up a mug and handed it to Yabu. Inoo left the room. Once he was out of earshot, he glanced at the name of the caller. He stifled a laugh as he answered the call from Yabu.

“Hello?”

“Inoo?” Yabu whispered so silently that he barely understood.

“Why did you call?” Inoo asked.

“Anou… Could you please tell me what Takaki’s cards are?”

Inoo laughed as he heard Yabu struggling and more voices on the other end.

“Inoo-chan! Don’t you dare help Yabu! He rejected the mug that I offered him!” Hikaru demanded. He heard Takaki in the background, “What?! How could you use Hikaru’s Inoo-chan for such a vile deed?!”

Another voice echoed, “Shh! You’ll wake Chinen!” Inoo laughed. It was Daiki.

“Hey, that’s my phone! Give it back!” a pause and some fighting on the other end before he spoke again, “Yo! Inoo! Never mind, I’m busted! Ja~” He hung up.

Inoo returned to the living room to see the cards scattered everywhere. He glanced at the tangled heap of limbs that was Takaki and Yabu.

Inoo woke up with a start. Something was wrong. He checked his surroundings; nothing seemed wrong in the room he shared with Daiki. He listened closely for unusual noises, but he didn’t hear anything from his bandmates’ rooms except for the gushing of running water. He immediately reached for his phone and dialed a number.

“Inoo-chan!”

“I knew it, why aren’t you asleep yet?”

“I haven’t showered yet,”

“And why the hell is that?” Inoo replied.

“There’s a roach on the door knob, and whatever I scare it with, it won’t move!” Yabu screeched, almost waking Chinen who was sleeping in the other bed. On the other end, Inoo sat up, thinking.

“Have you tried swatting it?”

“There’s nothing to swat it with!”

“Use your pillow, then,”

“I don’t want roach germs on my pillow!”

Inoo struggled to think of more solutions, “Jaa, call Hikaru-kun,”

“You want me to be laughed at tomorrow? No way!”

“What animals eat roaches?” Inoo asked.

Yabu answered, “I don’t know… Cats?”

Impatiently, Inoo answered back, “Get a cat, then,”

Yabu laughed a sarcastic laugh, “You look like a cat yourself, COME OVER HERE AND SCARE IT AWAY!”

Inoo continued from his previous phrase, “Shove the cat into Hikaru-kun’s room when you’re done,” he laughed so loud that Daiki shushed him.

“Fine, I’ll scare your stupid roach,” said Inoo. Yabu breathed a sigh of relief. The younger boy continued, “But you have to kill it once I get off the doorknob,”

Yabu was bored. He couldn’t sleep but he couldn’t do anything else either. He thought of one person who could still be awake at 1 AM.

“Hello?”

“Inoo-chan?”

“Hey, what’s up, Yabu-kun?”

“I can’t sleep. Help me please,” Yabu pleaded.

“Hmm… okay,” Inoo laughed, “How about a story, then?”

“Okay!” Yabu perked up. “Tell me one!”

“No. You tell me one,” And hopefully you’d fall asleep, he thought.

Yabu obviously didn’t like this. “Ehh?! Why do I have to tell the story? All that comes into my mind is the time that I almost kissed Yama-chan-“

Inoo looked at his phone as the line died.

“Hey Yabu-kun,”

“Nani…?”

“You really love Hikaru-kun, don’t you?”

“Not as much as I love you,”

“Seriously?”

“Yes,”

“Well then, I love you too, Yabu-mama,”

Inoo was worried. Please pick up, he thought. Holding his phone, he dialed Yabu’s number for the thirtieth time. Finally, someone answered on the other line.

“Please Inoo, stop calling me,” Yabu sobbed.

“I know you don’t mean that,” Inoo replied, feeling a little relieved that he finally picked up his call. “Kou-chan, just tell me, or at least talk. Please say something,”

Yabu lay on his bed. He didn’t really want to talk to anyone. Not even Hikaru. Inoo should know that. He remained silent as Inoo kept talking on the other line.

“You know we don’t want this either. It’s not just Ya-Ya-Yah that broke up. It’s the whole team. It’s you guys, the J.J. Express and all the groups under it,” Inoo waited for a response. When none came, he continued, “Think about how many fans will become heartbroken once they find out. The people who have stayed by your side for five years, watching you perform as kids and witnessing your transition from children to young men. They’re going to miss you so much,”

Inoo paused again, but this time he was determined to get something out of Yabu. “Stop being such a brat, Yabu-kun! You’re always self-centered when it comes to things like these!. You’re not the only one who feels this way, you know,”

Yabu stayed stock-still on the other end. His tears flowed from his eyes. He couldn’t stop crying; he wanted to leave. He wanted to disappear. But most of all, he wanted Johnny to take back what he told them yesterday.

“Inoo-chan…” he sobbed, “It’s just too much… The stress… school… and now this… What-what should I do?”

Inoo paused as he thought of an answer. Yabu continued.

“Nothing good will come of this… Now that Taiyou’s gone… Shoon too… Maybe I should have just quit-“

“Now don’t say that!” Inoo interrupted. He can’t take any more of this.

“Listen to me,” he told Yabu, but the former Ya-Ya-Yah leader kept crying. Inoo raised his voice, “I said, LISTEN TO ME!” Inoo was getting a bit annoyed at the leader’s stubbornness. “Please stop crying for a few moments and listen to me,”

He heard Yabu sniffle as he wiped the tears from his eyes. “That’s better,” he said, smiling. “Stop worrying, Yabucchi. Taiyou’s going to be fine. He’s smart-well, school-wise, at least-he’ll get through this. I can see him smiling,”

Yabu interjected, “What about Shoon? He’s staying, you know,”

“Well, if he could make a decision that big, it means he can handle the responsibility. He’s not a child anymore,” Inoo turned and lay on his back. Yabu, on the other hand, sat up and leaned against his headboard. “I just want to quit from all of this and - “

“And what, leave me? Leave Hikaru? Break everything that you have been working toward for years? Jeez, Kou-chan,” he almost laughed at this and at what he was about to say.

“Kou-chan, we love you. We know you can do this; endure more than this. Stop being a brat and realize that already!”

Yabu was shocked into silence. Never had he realized how concerned they were for him. He began to shed tears again.

Inoo listened to his friend’s soft sobs and closed his eyes. At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to hug Yabu.

“For once, why don’t you let us take care of you. It’s always the other way around, isn’t it?”
