Maybe something you didn't know....

I did something today that I haven't done in YEARS.
I went "outside. No, I don't mean to go get the mail or walk the dog. Actually go outside and PLAY. I got dirty and sweaty, got my shoes muddy, got scratched by thorns and prickly bushes, ran up and down hills, fell into the grass, turned over rocks, and jumped into a stream. Like a little child.
I discovered something: if you watch and wait, you will see many things you never thought you'd see. I got really close to squirrels and watched them play. I saw a little black beetle swim in and out underwater. Did you know some beetles actually go underwater? I didn't. I lifted up some rocks in the creek and caught little freshwater shrimp in my hands. I even saw a salamander and almost caught him too.
My most valuable find was a singing frog. I've never heard a frog sing and then actually find him. There is much construction going on where I used to play when I was ten years old and I was afraid everything might have changed and the nature was gone. But it wasn't. In fact there were some new things-a huge shallow pool has formed at the bottom of a hill in the what-used-to-be a meadow. I explored it and heard the oddest sounds which I thought might have been some kind of machinery but it was frogs! I was so delighted to find frogs in the destroyed meadow that I think I may have even laughed when I saw him.

Today made me remember how much I loved to explore around outside and find animals before I turned into an indoors-only, inactive computer/anime freak. It made me realize how unhealthy it was to keep to my own artificial fantasy world and shut fresh air and sunlight out of my life 24/7. And I realized that Mary Lennox from the book,The Secret Garden and I had even more in common than I thought, because like her, I always shut myself up in my room and never have a real appetite and desperately need to get more healthy in both mind and body. But if she was able to improve so beautifully, couldn't I do the same?

I am making an effort to go outside more often from now on. I swear it.
