Unsolicited advice: Are you part of a union? All grocery stores (sans Walmart/Target and their ilk) where I live - Colorado - have unionized employees. They're unionized in IL too. If you have a union, go talk to your union rep NOW.
Insist that your manager find any/all security camera footage of the interaction.
Be prepared to go to the labor board.
If your state has one, get in contact with legal aid in case you require any legal protection and/or find out that the company's treatment of you violates your state's work laws.
Yeah, that's a good point that I did not think of myself! That's brilliant, thank you so much! I've just seen this one and sent a message to my uncle. He says this is good enough to link them, and with any footage we get from in the store it'll be good enough! Really thank you!
Yeah, the problem is is that I work in a right to work state so I don't have the protection or at least the security of a union. In fact, unionizing is illegal in my state. I have an uncle who is a lawyer and he's going to help me through this. Today, after having very little sleep because of yesterday he and I met and we drafted letters to the store and it's board for all footage et al. I've already drafted my official statement. We are going to, at all turns, refuse to accept blame for this, we will not be paying any money back. We're also looking for the parents. The good news is is that the security cameras in the store are top notch, we upgraded only three months ago. However, we haven't upgraded the parking lot cameras since Moses was in short pants. So if we can't see them or the car or anything then chances of finding them are slim to none, since, like I said, small city, huge, busy parking lot. We're right on a major freeway/interstate too, so they could literally be from and going anywhere. I'll try and keep updated.
Oddly enough in their defense, it's hard to see behind the register when you're on the other side. The computer screen itself is huge, plus we have the back box of the fruit and veggie scale so it's like one solid blind in front of you. I guess no one expected him to grab money. The sad thing is, if the boy hadn't started acting up I would have given him one of the stickers we keep in our personal drawers. That usually keeps the smaller kids occupied while we finish the transaction. Before that his parents were moderately polite. It was only after shit hit the fan that they went nutso.
Hells yes I'm fighting it. I'm a model employee. Been employee of the months four months straight, employee of the year twice, commendation from the higher ups, all that. Which is why I'm so damn shocked that they're behaving this way. I mean, I get it, this is a serious situation but they caught three people in the last year stealing and those people were just written up, retrained, and then placed where they didn't have access to money. Only one of those three has been fired and that's because he literally-I mean literally-after finally getting permission to cashier again stuck three rolls of quarters, a few twenties and some of the other denominations in his pocket
( ... )
Total bullshit! If nothing else, I would tell them you won't sue or go to the labor board if they agree to change their records to say that you resigned/quit. At least that way you won't have to have a firing on your record (especially since it sounds like a lot of your experience is there). Good luck. Children and their shitty parents are assholes.

Good luck. That's so shitty.

Also, try to get your own copies of the security footage. I would not trust the store to keep it if they try to throw you under the bus.
And when you talk to the cops, make sure they know they used an EBT. That might be something they can trace.
