I guess that's a good thing, though I'm a little bit c.c; at American culture forcing itself into other cultures again. I suppose it's unavoidable. In a general sense, though, I agree with what you said about documentaries. Stories are the best way to learn about other cultures, provided you can perceive and filter the biases of the storyteller.
Well, to be fair and a little more accurate - British culture is pushing itself on other cultures. American Idol is actually a spinoff of a British series, and the format has been used internationally. :) And I guess it sounds like foreign culture, but traditionally the Middle-East has had some gorgeous music coming out of it that has been somewhat smothered lately. One of the contestants said he grew up on classical music and he missed it dearly, and he was happy to have music once more!
Yeah, though, I try to be aware of the process of editing. I remember how Disney created a whole fucking myth about lemmings that still persists to this day by editing a documentary.
