Tom McCamus wins ACTRA, the actor’s union of Canada, has handed out its 2006 Toronto awards to two veterans of the screen and a 10-year-old newcomer.
Samantha Weinstein, 10, captured the outstanding female performance prize for her role in the short film Big Girl, launched at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival and winner of the festival’s Best Short Film award. She portrayed a girl who is skeptical of her single mom’s new boyfriend.
Weinstein made her feature film debut in the 2004 black comedy Siblings at the age of eight. Her credits include several television guest appearances such as Swarmed on the Sci-Fi Network.
Tom McCamus has numerous film, television and stage credits. He won ACTRA’s outstanding male performance as Wayne Gretzky’s dad in the CBC TV movie Waking Up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story, airing last November.
McCamus had also won a Genie Award for his work in I Love a Man in Uniform as well as a nomination playing Sarah Polley’s father in The Sweet Hereafter, directed by Atom Agoyan. Other film appearances include Ginger Snaps (the prequel), Siblings and Beautiful Dreamers.
McCamus is a mainstay on television, currently playing the lead role of Eckhard (sic) in Mutant X. He has also made appearances in other Canadian TV shows such as Due South, Street Legal, The Newsroom and The Eleventh Hour.
The veteran actor also spent eight seasons at the Shaw Festival and several years at the Stratford Festival.
Polley, who began as the lead in Road to Avonlea, was bestowed the ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence, mostly for speaking out about the state of the Canadian film industry and her work in helping young actors.
Polley grabbed her first Gemini Award at the age of nine for the CBC movie Lantern Hill and later for her performance in the CBC series Straight Up. She hit the world stage as a film lead in the critically acclaimed The Sweet Hereafter, winner of the 1997 Grand Prix at Cannes.
Polley recently captured a Genie for her lead role as a dying woman in My Life Without Me. She has also moved into directing. Her first feature, Away From Her, is based on an Alice Munro short story.
The 2006 ACTRA Awards in Toronto were handed out at a gala in Toronto on Friday night. They recognize professional work done by the English-speaking Toronto members of ACTRA’s performers. About 13,000 of ACTRA’s 21,000 members are from Toronto.
